Canucks News Updates Today

Just listened to an interview with Brian Smolinski on TSN. He just arrived in St. Louis and was talking to them from the airport.  His comments: “I’m very excited…. emotions run through you very quickly… it never hits you too the end. Otherwise I’m ecstatic, excited to go to an excellent team with a chance to make a long run of it…”

I’m not sure if he’s playing tonight, but I suppose it’s likely. More news on that and other updates later.

Update 9:15am PT:
TSN’s Scott Cullen has just posted online a short breakdown of the Canucks trades yesterday.

Update 11:15am PT
Graham Kerr at the Globe & Mail also has a breakdown online about the new acquisitions. “The Vancouver Canucks not only acquired needed depth in trading for Bryan Smolinski and Brent Sopel on Monday, they got veterans that were plus players on National Hockey League teams with losing records.”

Update 11:27am PT
Blast from the past… Todd Bertuzzi has been traded to the Red Wings.  Will he and Chelios now be BFF? Wow… As The Stomach Turns.

Update 11:58am PT
Marc Chouinard cleared waivers and is now assigned to the Manitoba Moose.

Update 12:02pm PT
Brad Moran re-assigned to the Moose.

I guess JJ can take off the Oilers from his magic number banner, now that the Oil have dumped Mr. Everything…Ryan Smyth.  That is one of those moves that screams…REBUILD.

I feel bad for the Oilers fans as a fellow hockey fan. But as a Vancouver Canucks fan I’ll admit I rather enjoyed that trade.

If only Smyth could have come to Vancouver… but that’s a pipe dream for another day.

The Oilers are screaming rebuild, except they kinda forgot to rebuild at the deadline…

Sykora is still there.  Pisani is still there.  Roloson is still there.  Torres is still there.

Need I go on?

This is rather reminiscent of the Canucks circa 1997 or so.  Management screwing the fans, stuck with the wrong players w/ long contracts, and massively underacheiving.

Couldn’t have happened to a nicer team.

Temujin - In the wake of the Ryan Smyth trade, you can’t expect them to dump Roloson. He’s their clear #1 netminder. As for Torres, Sykora, and Pisani, look what they got back for their best player in Smyth. Can you imagine what they would have received in exchange for any of those three?

Maybe a couple of broken sticks, and an autographed Garth Snow 8x10?
