Iain MacIntyre at the Vancouver Sun:
They’ve made you laugh and made you cry, given you hope and left you despondent, enraged and uplifted you. You love them. You hate them, but never for long. You could probably live without them but can’t imagine the deprivation.
The Vancouver Canucks are the longest-running melodrama in our city, as indispensible as they are exasperating. Next Monday, after 38 years, the Canucks take their story - your story - to the big screen at theatres around B.C.
The National Hockey League team is releasing a feature-length documentary entitled Forever Faithful - The Canucks Movie.
Movie trailer and more below:
The documented life of Canucks fans and their relationship with their team… and it’s not a horror movie.
The film will be shown in theatres for just one day from the looks of it, then I think we can guess it’ll be on DVD just in time to slip under the Christmas tree.
And will Canucks fans buy it? Good god, will we ever…
The film was commissioned by the Vancouver Canucks and was apparently another brainchild of the team’s scary-smart president, Chris Zimmerman. Seriously, this guy is so good at sports branding and making money, I’m stunned every day that he wasn’t scooped up by the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Anyway, truth be told this kind of sports documentary is exactly the kind of thing I really enjoy. The fact that it was filmed during a season that came to such a bad ending—missing the playoffs—is unfortunate for the team’s marketers but I think that’s what makes it perfect.
After all, if you’re going to make a doc about the culture of Vancouver hockey fans, a season that ends in disappointment and trauma is probably the perfect dénouement.

Perfect choice of song, must watch insanity. I like the mother listening to a game on the radio while at her child’s baseball game.

At the 1:00 mark, I thought that guy was about to toss his kid in celebration of the goal.
Pretty smart move like you said, Alanah.

I enjoy the Naslund “struggling with my identity” clip. Rock solid dude.
Personally I enjoy being retired two weeks ago and now having a movie to “us”. Any more of this and I may get some sort of ego complex. Or, more simply, a complex.

I just found the rating on this thing: G.
* Two scenes depicting sports injuries.
Forever Faithful The Canucks Movie does not contain violence, coarse language, nudity or sexually suggestive scenes.
Dammit. I guess that’s the price you pay when Mark Messier isn’t featured…

Apparently I was in the movie (Michael Meyer of Bombo Sports & Entertainmen ‘phoned me a few months ago and sent me a Model Release form).
I was at a PPV game showing in the theatre when some guy with a video camera asked to interview me. That’s not the sort of thing I’m comfortable with- I get the deer-in-the-headlightsitis when a camera is pointed at me. I hope that I didn’t make a complete fool of myself.
