Curtis Sanford Back, Red Wings Forfeit Game

From the Vancouver Sun, via the Financial Post:

Curtis Sanford will be Vancouver’s starting goaltender today when the Canucks meet the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena (4:30 p.m. faceoff, Vancouver time).

Sanford, who had to pull himself after one period in Monday night’s game in Columbus because of back spasms, pronounced himself ready to play after this morning’s game-day skate.

Great news, since last time Sanford took on the Wings was fun for the whole family.

A comment from Wings fan Animal Drew on another post of mine yesterday points out one of the bonuses to games like that last one: “Your boy Sanford shut me up last time.”

Indeed he did. And shutting up Wings fans is hard to do, so take it from me: Sanford deserves our unwavering appreciation. (It’s the little things that make life worthwhile!) smile

Although on that note, it was pointed out to me just yesterday that the first image that shows up on Google when you search my name is of me wearing a freakin’ Red Wings jersey—the result of a lost bet a couple years ago.

So karma gets it’s sick payback from me, too.

7:15pm PT—Post-Game Thoughts:

“&*#@*$!*#^! ”

(That should about cover it.)

Maybe it’s just the bitter Wings fan in me, but I hated when the Canucks celebrated that OT win as if they had won a flippin’ playoff series…

“Act like you’ve been there before.”

Okay, that’s definitely the bitter Wings fan in me, but it doesn’t seem like teams that are used to success get overly excited about an early regular season OT win.  tongue rolleye

Alright, game on, I got the trash talk going!  grin

As they say, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then.

I figure Sanford got tired of getting his ass handed to him by the Wings on a regular basis when he was with the BBBs and decided to turn in one for the ages.  Smart money says it doesn’t happen again tonight.

As the zen master says, “we’ll see.”

Nathan -- That celebration wasn’t about that game in particular, but a ritual the team has just with Sanford after every win. It’s a bit of a hoot-and-holler fest and I have no idea where it came from but we’ve seen it a few times.

You Red Wings fans.... always think everything is about you! wink

Mudshark - Blind squirrels? Zen Masters? Those are some mighty philosophical concepts to bring to a hockey conversation where I’m pondering nothing more deeply than the question “Who’s gonna kick whose ass tonight?”

Not going to make any grand proclamations—that’s why they play the games—but it does seem like every time a team beats the Wings this season—which you have to admit hasn’t been all that often—they act like they get a free trip to Disney World.

Hmmmm, based on some of the other screwy stuff that goes on with little gary’s league, maybe they do!

LOL

If you’re referring to the post-game celebration of the Canucks last game, then you might want to read my response to Nathan above.

So self-absorbed is Red Wings nation… wink

Last I checked, the Canucks are the only team to have beaten Detroit twice this year.  You Wings fans can bitch all you want about that celebration, but it doesn’t take away the fact that your team lost - twice.  Have slice of humble pie and enjoy the game tonight.

Wellwood with an OT winner tonight 4-3.

Actually, it’s the other teams that are self-absorbed...unless, of course, good ol’ mr. bettman really is handing out free trips to the Magic Kingdom for defeating the Winged Wheelers.

Not bitching, just observing.

And, as I said initially, I’m not making any grand proclamations about victory or superiority. My hat is off to the Canucks for their performance thus far this season. Given all of the changes and uncertainty with a new GM, concerns about the coach’s style and decisions not to re-sign long-term mainstays like Naslund and Morrison, I think they’ve probably done better than even most of their own fans expected.

If the Wings win tonight, great. If not, I’ll probably be pissed off for about an hour, then move on. If they meet in the playoffs, that’s a whole “nother” story…

Man, everyone is sounding so reasonable and adult, although I imagine that’ll change shortly.

Meanwhile, I have made some efforts lowering this dialogue into the gutter, and the Sailor Boy has chipped one back at me. smile

Random thought of the day: The Canucks should go after Claude Lemieux

This game isn’t even going to be close.  5-1 Canucks

D Sedin (2), Demitra, Raymond, Salo

Gallant

And Osgood will get pulled after letting 4 goals in the first period.

Guess who was at the game last night, Alanah....that’s right.  And guess who didn’t get shut up this time(especially when Sanford was pulled)...that’s right.  Looks Sanford might have lost that bid for an “A” on his mask.  Good series though, you guys continue to be a pain.  Good luck in that NW division.  I’ll try and drop in whenever I can but I don’t watch too many ‘Nucks games because of the time difference and my DVR is filled with “Heroes” episodes.

Yours truly,

AnimalDrew

Thats the difference from an annual Cup contender such as Detroit, and another also-ran such as the CaNOTS.....CaNOTS get excited over a regular season victory, because everyone knows they wont get many , if any when the playoffs start, if they get there.
