Game 7: Bruins/Canucks—Open Post

Sometime tonight, a whole lot of people will be celebrating and a whole lot of others will be feeling pretty crappy. But what we can all agree on, I hope, is that it would be great to enjoy a fantastic hockey game before that final buzzer. A roller-coaster series like this one deserves to end with an epic game.
Whatever team you’re rooting for, enjoy the ride. (And… Go Canucks!)
P.S. I wrote a post before this series about all the reasons I’d celebrate winning a Stanley Cup. One of those reasons was in the memory of Luc Bourdon. So I’ll let Tom Cochrane end this post with his tribute to Bourdon nearly three years ago:

I guess at this point it is May the Best Team Win.
But as a fan of an Original Six team, you kind of feel an attachment to other O6 teams when they make it this far.
So…Go Bruins!
(but Van, if you win, I won’t be terribly disappointed)

I can respect that. And I’ll take the positives… “not terribly disappointed” is something I can feel at least a little cheered by.

Luc needs to step it up tonight…he did it for Burr against Chicago…and Juice against San Jose…
I’ve been so incredibly keyed up all day…I’m just going to (hopefully) enjoy this one and then shave the playoff beard around my smiling face.
Go Canucks
Posted by GZ Expat on 06/15/11 at 07:55 PM ET
Hope you’ve got lots of pics of the beard. It’ll help with the visuals when you’re telling your grandkids one day “the silly crap we did waiting for the Canucks to win their first Stanley Cup…”

No pics…but I think I will have the wife do a before and after. I saw a woman at work today that I haven’t seen in probably 3 or 4 years…she double taked, squinted her eyes at me and I had to say, “my face is very hairy, I know” then she recognized me. ha.
The good thing about this…I know now that I can never, ever grow a beard for real. heh

Can we set something up so Ryan Kesler and Tim Thomas can both win?

My mind says Canucks, but my heart says Boston. Either way I win.
Posted by monkey from lighting my nuts on fire on 06/15/11 at 08:20 PM ET
GZ Expat— Beards don’t work well on me either. (Maybe not a shock.)
Monkey— Sure. Thomas can have the Conn Smythe if the Canucks and Kes can have the Cup. Will that be okay?

Braindead realization of the day for me- both team captains are European. No way out for Don Cherry.
Will that be okay?
My mind-half says this is inevitable.

And they’re both #33. If that means anything to any numerologists out there…

I hope that European will be a swede..to hoist the SC… but as long you have luongo in goal it’s not going to happen.

I’m not worried about the overall game yet. Just hoping that the Canucks have a good second period. Second periods have been bad at times. But a tie or 1 goal game into the third, I’ll be happy.

Game seven of the Stanley Cup Final, at home… not a good time to emulate the Detroit Red Wings.
Posted by monkey from lighting my nuts on fire on 06/15/11 at 09:34 PM ET
I see we’re using the same rule book (and officials) used for game 7 Tampa Bay / Boston—the one written by Sgt. Schultz—“I see nothing–NOTHING!”
I’m not paying close enough attention to know how much is being ignored, but it’s pretty clear than any penalty in this game is going to need to be very, very blatant.

None. The Canucks were the first and are currently the only team in the NHL with no championships to have appeared in game seven of a Final. From 2003-2007 they had a buddy, the Ducks. Prior to 1994 no team had ever lost a game seven without having previously won the Cup at least once.

I didn’t buy it from day one, and he’s proven beyond a shadow of a doubt he is a major league choker. (and don’t talk to me about the Olympics; that’s a whole different animal)

I’m going to stay off the “Fry Luongo” bandwagon, but as an American I don’t think I’ll ever forget that gold medal game. He seemed shaky all game to say the least, but the USA could never get good pressure on him. In OT they looked like they were just going through the motions. Very disappointing; I was sure they could have won.

People like simple answers to complicated problems.. Easier to say “Luongo sucks” than looking at the whole picture. Apparently these same people think it’s possible for the Canucks to win without scoring a single goal thus far, too.

See my comments on a previous post here about the multitude of injuries the Canucks are playing through. As I recall, the last Wings attempt at a Cup was met by the same issues against an inferior team. That was frustrating, wasn’t it?

Goal #2: a professional goalie should have “moving from one of the net to the other” in his repetroire.
Goals #3: a professional goalie should not allow a goal when, as Herm said, there wasn’t even a shot on net.
And to be fair, he’s given up an average of 5 goals in 3 of the previous 4 games. IF that doesn’t happen maybe people aren’t so quick to jump on him.

Frustrating. That’s one way to put it. I found it to be devastating. Injuries and officiating, friends. Injuries and officiating. Vancouver has struggled without Hamhuis and Rome. Replacing two d-men on the fly in the Final is not too easy.

He’s good enough to get you a President’s Trophy, that’s it. And I’ve made this criticism of him for a few years now, so I’m not piling on just because of a few games in this series.
Your guys aren’t scoring? This is true. But is it all their fault, or is Thomas playing exceptionally well?

It’s a team game. Blaming it all on the goalie is overly simplistic. As above, Vancouver has struggled without Hamhuis and Rome. Replacing two d-men on the fly in the Final is not an easy task.

Posted by monkey from bat country on 06/15/11 at 10:02 PM ET
I really believe the loss of Rome was the turning point in this series. Not only did Van lose a dependable d-man, but Boston found a rallying point.
I thought in the first two games it looked like Boston was just happy to be there. Van looked much better. All that changed in Game 3, after the Rome hit on Horton.
Posted by Red Winger from Sault Ste Marie on 06/15/11 at 10:06 PM ET
See my comments on a previous post here about the multitude of injuries the Canucks are playing through.
Boston has played the entire playoffs without one of their best players (who may never play again) and they’ve been without Nathan Horton too.

Well ... if you go back and read my posts, you’ll see my general consensus is Luongo sucks. Is he to blame for the possible Cup loss?
Not entirely, but largely.
Posted by Red Winger from Sault Ste Marie on 06/15/11 at 10:08 PM ET
Vultures going for the carcass…I just don’t see Luongo’s performance as the reason why its 3-0. It’s is a very simplistic view of things.
If your team loses…blame the goalie. Errr…but what about the defense? From what I am told, hockey is a team sport…now, I haven’t played, but I think if I were on a team and I was down 3-0 after two periods and I went into the room and pointed my finger at the goalie and said YOU SUCK, I really think I should be grabbing a mirror first and looking at what I have done to help us win.
Right now, the rest of the team hasn’t done much after the first 10 minutes of this game.

Man, he’s just an easy target. Goalies are always an easy target.
The guy allowed more goals than most mediocre goalies, all while stating differences regarding Thomas and him (I know what he meant, but he was just providing critics with ammunition).
And don’t pretend his defenders aren’t affected by his play, too.
Posted by Guilherme from Brazsil on 06/15/11 at 10:15 PM ET
I just don’t see Luongo’s performance as the reason why its 3-0.
Not the only reason, no. But he sure as f*ck hasn’t done a lot to help.
Last time they flashed the shots on goal onscreen, Boston had 13. That’s 3 goals on 13 shots. I mean, he’s made twice as many saves as he made in Game 6, but that’s still not nearly good enough for Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Bruins, what can I say? You won four of the last five games. You had more heart and drive when it counted. Well done, and enjoy your parade, Boston.
Tim Thomas, from one Michigander to another: you rock!

Kudos to the B’s…they played a helluva game tonight. Congrats as well to the ‘Nucks for a freakin fantastic season. It’s crazy….they’re basically the best team all season long, then lose on the very last night of the season. Van will be a contender for a while. Even though I’ve never thought Luongo to be an elite netminder, this loss wasn’t on him…his team really did just look out of gas. I’ve seen that before with the Wings. Great finals, though…bring on the 2011-12 season already.
TIMMAH!

Seriously, its such an embarassment what is happening in dt right now. GOD, have a little class. When it comes down to it, boston just wanted a lot more then we did this game. Anyone can argue that the refs rigged it, i call bs. U still have to score at least 1 goal to win a game. Can’t really blame luongo, but still it hurts so bad.
THESE IDIOTS IN DT just make it that much worse. Bunch of poor sports make the majority of fans just look so bad.
IM so choked right now, i dont even know what to say anymore.
Makes me ashamed to be in vancouver, seeing this crap going on in dt. CLASSY. *#$%@&

Well. Balls.
I watched every game this playoffs, this season, and this pre-season…..also this pre-pre-season, a training camp up in Kelowna that they webcast.
Great year. What a riot. Oops. I mean tonne of fun.
Does everyone remember last year?
And how harsh would that have been to lose to the Khawks in this first round? That was insane. It was a storybook playoff that went awry when Rome thought “big hit”, instead of “big game”.
Great year.
And yet, oh, does it sting.
Hopefully enough lessons have been learned.
The refs boned us, but that doesn’t matter. Winning without the calls is what a great team can do. The canucks reaction to the fact that the refs were gonna watch the Bruins go to town on them was the exact opposite of what it should have been. They felt that they had to play goon hockey too, but they don’t know how. Got away from their game. You are supposed to bear down and take the lumps until the hockey gods deem you worthy of a bounce.
aargh. bummer. like tomorrow’s news will presumably be full of. (man i hope that suicide isn’t true…..that’s a sour pickle on a shxt sandwich)
Anyway really. Let’s keep a perspective on what a fun season this was…..on the generally wet and whiny west coast. (and on life and sport, as always)

Come on Bruins . . . the whole hockey world is counting on you to dispatch this sorry collection of divers, whiners, fakers, crybabies and cheap-shot artists. Then, there’s the Canucks front-office.
PLEASE. SCORE. FIRST.
Then, perhaps, the whole house of cards comes down.
