Hockey Day in Canada Begins

From CBC,
It’s been called “Canada’s Second National Anthem.” It’s heard on backyard rinks, frozen ponds across the country, the asphalt tarmac of an air base serving Canadian troops in Afghanistan — wherever Canadians gather with sticks in hand.
Dun-dun-DUN-DUN-dah…
Come Saturday, the Hockey Night in Canada Theme will echo in the Selkirk Mountains around Nelson, a city of about 10,000 people in B.C.’s Southern Interior.
And so finally, Hockey Fan Christmas officially begins. Here’s some stuff on the schedule:
Montreal at Ottawa - CBC, RDS
Vancouver at Toronto - CBC, RDS
Edmonton at Calgary - CBC, RDS
The entire day is also being broadcast on Center Ice for subscribers. And non-subscribers can get a free preview this week. For everything related to HDIC on the CBC’s website, go here.
Lots of features will be a part of the broadcast, for instance,
Ron MacLean, Don Cherry, Cassie Campbell, Dick Irvin and hockey commentator Scott Morrison will be joined by Maple Leafs legend Wendel Clark, who will run a hockey clinic for young players to develop their skills.
Scott Morrison also has an excellent idea for next year:
...but when you think about how many people’s live hockey affects and impacts, of how many play, watch, volunteer or are just plain interested, at all levels, when you think of what it means to our culture, why not have an official holiday weekend wrapped around Hockey Day in Canada? As it stands, in terms of official holidays we celebrate New Year’s and there isn’t another holiday until Easter.
God, that’d be perfect. An extra day to recover.
Update 10:45 am ET:
HDIC updates will be liveblogged throughout the day on this post. So if you’re looking to share information and stories, I’ll see you there!
