Hockey Night in Canada—At the Movies!

imageWith thanks to the Vancouver International Film Festival, 3 winners will each receive a pair of movie tickets.

Enter by leaving a comment below or by sending me your entry via Twitter telling me your favorite hockey movie. I’ll draw three names out of a hat on Tuesday, March 3rd.  Don’t forget to provide your email address.

The event is the Vancity Theatre’s “Hockey Nights in Film” playing in Vancouver from March 9th - March 20th.

To cultivate the Olympic spirit a year in advance of Vancouver 2010, the Vancity Theatre presents a fortnight devoted to the games’ signature sport. Focused on our proud tradition of sports filmmaking—Canada takes the lead in not only hockey, but hockey films—this series runs the gamut from beloved national classics, Hollywood joyrides, and cinéma vérité documentaries. A game of men with sticks on skates, hockey is often used as a vehicle to explore masculinity, whether in portraying those who are attracted by the violent aspects of the sport (in the fisticuffs of a Slap Shot or the true-life exploits of Brian “Spinner” Spencer) or drawing laughs from the quite natural confusion that results when hockey clashes with subjects less than macho (such as in Perfectly Normal or last year’s hit Breakfast with Scot ). If you can’t get Canucks tickets, we’ll see you at the movies!

Below is the schedule for all the films, followed by details on each one.  And there’s a couple there I’ve never seen—or even heard of—before.

Cool contest as usual, Alanah.

Even though I’m only a “Canadian at heart,” and won’t be able to attend this exciting event, I can’t resist weighing in.

My favorite hockey movie is definitely Slap Shot, although I also must confess to enjoying other, “lesser” films such as Mystery, Alaska, Miracle, Youngblood, and even MVP—Most Valuable Primate. (What can I say, I have five kids!)

On another note, is it just me or did some of the blurbs for the films seem to offer a less-than-kind subtext of psychoanalysis RE: hockey and its fans?

For example, this excerpt from their description of Happy Gilmore:

“It’s but a small step from the Sandler’s typical man-boy character to the Hanson Brothers, and also to Jeffrey Dahmer.”

All I can say is “wow.”

I can understand the ‘kids movies’ appeal. Though it’s notable you didn’t mention “The Mighty Ducks”, isn’t it? wink

About the Jeffrey Dahmer thing… I didn’t understand the initial reference at all. But if you’re right and it’s a comment on the psychology of hockey fans, I’m worried now!

P.S. Anyone who enters the contest that doesn’t live in Vancouver can always arrange to have the tickets forwarded to a friend or family member in Vancouver. It’s no problem. Vancouverites like presents, ya know… smile

Okay, I get the hint, Alanah.

If I win, the tickets are yours!  LOL

RE: the “Dahmer thing,” I probably should have said…

“psychoanalysis RE: hockey players and, by extension, their fans.”

But either way, it seems a pretty huge leap—not a “small step”—from the adolescent immaturity and brutality of the Hansons to chopping people up and eating them. Sheesh!

Slap Shot is by far my fave hockey movie.
When I was young I liked Hockey Nights staring Megan Follows as a goalie trying to make the boys team. Awesome Canadiana!!! Youngblood kicked a$$ and I hate to admit it because it had skating in it, but I liked the Cutting Edge too..."Toe-pick!"

Right now my favorite is: Smile (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1158788/)
Kids movie so watchable with the littles, which is the only time the TV is on anyways.

It’s also filmed close to where I live which is always cool, unless you’re talking about lame movies involving Ryan Phillipe (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0218817/locations).

Trini - how cool… I totally forgot about that Megan Follows thing. Anne of Green Gables On Ice! smile

Mo - I’ve never heard of that Japanese movie before.  Thanks!
