If You Were GM of the Canucks…

In an article basically asking “What would you do as the next GM of the Vancouver Canucks?”, Iain MacIntyre at the Vancouver Sun* has the oddest suggestion:
An intriguing figure for the Canucks could be Anaheim defenceman Scott Niedermayer, who might be coaxed from retirement a second time for the chance to finish his career in his home province.
Huh? If MacIntyre wants to see Niedermayer in a Canucks sweater, he’s going to have to do more than “coax” the guy to join the team—he’s going to have to pull a trade. The now-vacationing defenseman is still under contract to the Ducks for next season, assuming he decides to play.
Aside from that gaffe, MacIntyre does have a pile interesting of acquisition ideas. (Though personally, I’m less interested in the ones that involve $7 million defensemen than those that involve guys who know how to freakin’ score.)

Blue chip players (especially forwards) should be traded when they are 2/3 of the way through their career.
Think about it, they are high salary and their production will start to tail off.
With this thinking Naslund would have been gone 2 years ago. Where would the Canucks have been now?
Salo and Ohlund (NTC yes I know)should be traded soon. This year or next while a good return can be had and Van has depth at d.
