In Vancouver: Luongo Talk

GM Mike Gillis, on negotiations with Roberto Luongo, from TSN:

“I think philosophically we’re very close and I think to get top players signed it usually does take a longer period of time,” Gillis told the station on Tuesday.  “We’ve had a lot of stuff happen in the meantime. We were moving really well and then we had the draft and free-agency and some other distractions occurred. But we feel really confident that we’re all on the same page and it’s only a matter of everyone getting focussed on the final part of it to get it done. We intend to (get it done before the season). We hope to. I know Laurence (Gilman) has had some discussions with Roberto’s agent as early as yesterday. We’re getting there and we’re confident that we’ll get something done.”

Luongo, 30 is entering the final year of a four-year, $27 million contract.

Lord only knows what “philosophically” close means in hockey negotiations.  Perhaps signing Jannik Hansen is what will finally inspire Luongo to sign Gillis’ deal??  (In which case, Gillis really does deserve that new Presidential title...)  Or perhaps Louie is just waiting for some “philosophical discussions” on the topic of Matt Sundin, or some other imagined magic 8 ball for the coming season?

Then again, there’s always Jerry McGuire’s favorite “philosophy of negotiation”... i.e. Show me the money!

Yep, that might be it, too… smile

I hadn’t heard about Hansen yet—lucky to get him on a two-way contract like that. It gives them more flexibility and he’ll have to be hungry to stay up. He’s definitely a guy who could outperform that contract by a mile, being a useful two-way player who will likely take it up a notch again this year. I thought he was good last year, despite the apparent consensus that he had a bad season…he just ran into crap luck with the timing of his injury. I like his effort and he shows flashes of skill at both ends of the ice.

As far as Luongo goes…yes, he’s awesome, but at an astronomical price and term, it wouldn’t be worth it. Another 3-4 years at $6-7 million, of course anyone would sign him…but what about six years at $8 million? I’m not so sure that’s the best use of a cap-limited budget.

Well, I’m rather satisfied that my countryman Jannik Hansen signed a contract. Probably not quite the contract he hoped but the money is tight and there are not a lot of open roster spots left in the league, so I hope he’ll continue to improve and get a better contract next year.

I don’t follow Vancouver that closely, so I have a couple of questions. Answers and opinions are welcome.

How are Hansen’s NHL chances this year, and will Hodgson return to the OHL or get a legitimate shot to make the team?

If he resigns, can we get an interview with his blocker?  Please?

Maybe it means they both agree he should get paid a lot of money…  and the only difference remaining is each side’s definition of “a lot.”

Moq, Hansen will be in tough to make the Canucks this season, I see a 70-30 split this season between the Manitoba Moose and the Canucks (injuries obviously will give Hansen more opportunities with the big club).

As for Hodgson, I think he’ll be a regular with the Canucks this season, there’s nothing to be gained by sending him back to the OHL.

Jeremy— Or if you really want to freak, how about imagining “9 years at $11.5 million per year”?  This is the NHL, after all, where even worse contracts exist!

Moq— Hansen played 55 games in Vancouver last season and only a couple in the minors, so while it’ll be tighter this year, I think you can expect he’ll continue to get playing time in the NHL.  As for Hodgson, I’m no expert but I think he certainly has a legitimate shot.  Vancouver would like him to break out sooner rather than later. He’s one of their big potential assets.

ShaneTx— Ha! Really? You don’t think I should interview his glove hand? Maybe his mouthguard? smile (For anyone who’s confused, you can check this.)

BobZ— Nice zinger. But where the hell are you when I need you??

Alan—  Hit and run. You Georgians have no class… wink

Dash pinched— Good points. Thanks!
