Canucks & Beyond

Just 59 Days…

Hockey is apparently coming sooner than we thought. Because of the miracle of Sportsnet (that is, the miracle of the network suddenly realizing they had a captive, hockey-desperate audience in late September, well-primed by training camp reports, and anxious to see a puck drop and a body check) we’re getting 2 pre-season games this year: Sept 22 vs San Jose and Sept 29 vs Edmonton. Both are road games and both are meaningless to the season schedule.

And I’m thrilled, anyway.  The Canucks have only ever televised two other pre-season games in their whole history.

This is great news for those of us who don’t live in Vancouver especially—all we ever usually get to see is highlights; it’ll be great to see a couple full games to judge for ourselves some of the line mixes and players that Vigneault experiments with in the pre-season.

Well, at least for me.  I get depressed hearing from the likes of J.J. and DaveO as they attend those games and smugly share all the details while I remain clueless. smile

now, if only sportsnet wouldn’t cheap out and actually pay for the national broadcasting rights for regular season games, us transplanted canucks fans living in toronto would collectively go down on nick kypreos… (he’s still at sportnet right?)

Grey Wall— LOL!! Kypreos?? God, don’t say that…

I wonder what the limitations would be for them broadcasting games from their other divisional networks (like Sportsnet Pacific) online to regions that normally receive different Sportsnet programming (like Sportsnet Ontario, in your case).  Sportsnet does have a lot of catching up to do with TSN and CBC in the world of internet broadcasting and the Canucks seem like a good test case for trying this.  (Assuming that it’s possible at all, given broadcasting rights issues).

Regardless, I’m pretty sure I read somewhere recently that they will be nationally broadcasting a lot more of the Canucks games. I’ll try and track that down. I can’t remember the details at the moment.

Out of curiosity, can you buy the game package via Center Ice in Ontario?  We can’t get that out here on the west coast.

i’m not sure about that package. But i’ll definitely look into it closer to the season. you never realize it until you move to anothe timezone that cbc’s hockey coverage sux. If they’re the national broadcaster, at least pony up for games during the week.
