Luongo Says “No” to All Star Game

Update 9:15am PT, January 10th: Henrik Sedin makes the All Star team. Nifty.
From TSN,
With travel demands and his wife expecting a baby, the Vancouver Canucks have allowed netminder Roberto Luongo to skip the NHL All-Star Game on Jan. 26 and miss the team’s first game back after the break.
Luongo’s wife Gina is expecting their first child later in the spring and the couple plans to spend their time off at their offseason home in Fort Lauderdale.
There was a hint of this yesterday when Matthew Sekeres at the Globe & Mail made of point of noting that Luongo had avoided comment on being named to the starting lineup.
The bigger surprise is probably that he’s taking a night off after the break. (Curtis Sanford must be jubilant.)
P.S. While on the subject of Canucks and the ASG, there’s also this item published today in The Province, where Jason Botchford wonders why the Sedins haven’t gotten more consideration for that game.
I don’t disagree with him, but the article seems a bit whiney.

I’d probably like to see Louie get his family time out of the way now...rather than in April or May, when his wife has the baby. I’ve got to wonder what will happen on that day…

The all star game is a joke anyways.
I’d be willing to guess that there is no team in the league that travels as much as Vancouver. Who can blame the guy?
If you did minutes played multiplied by miles travelled I would bet the only tender close would be Kipper over in flamerville.

Ryan: quite right. James Mirtle did a post on travel distances earlier this year, and concluded that Vancouver travels the most (more than 4000 kilometres further than Edmonton, the second-closest). Calgary’s fourth, 14000 km back, so Kipper is probably the only goalie even close (2 and 3 are Edmonton and Colorado, both of which use two goalies regularly). Oh, and that “workhorse” Brodeur? His team travels the least in the league (almost 40 000 km less than the Canucks). It would have been nice to see him there, but I don’t blame Luongo for skipping the All-Star game or the one afterwards, given the horrendous travel schedule and the amount he plays.

Well, Jeff, it looks like your prayers were answered and Osgood made the squad.
And incidentally, Henrik Sedin has been added to the team as well.
I agree, this isn’t a great idea for someone like Luongo—like Expat says, I’d rather see Louie take some time off. But for a Sedin, this is well deserved recognition. I’m quite happy for him.
God only knows what it’ll be like for him, without his brother to pass to, however.

Don’t worry, Henrik Zetterberg will pass to Henrik Sedin.

Hopefully this means Ozzie is playing in the ASG.
