Mitchell Out with Fractured Vertebra

From the CP (via Canada East Online):

Vancouver Canuck defenceman Willie Mitchell is sidelined with a fractured vertebra in his back.

Mitchell said Tuesday he won’t accompany the NHL team when it leaves Wednesday on a four-game road trip.

Mitchell, who has already missed three games, said he hurt his back after being checked during a game against Calgary after Christmas. He played nine games before the pain became too great.

Uh oh…

Update 2:45pm PT— CBC:

There is no specific recovery time for this type of injury — a stress fracture to the L2 vertebra in Mitchell’s back — but Vigneault said it could affect him for up to five weeks.  Vigneault also said Mitchell could play through the injury without aggravating it, though the pain might be too much.

“All the doctors that checked him, have all came to the same conclusion, with this type of stress fracture, if he can endure the pain, there is no way he can aggravate it,” the coach said. “It shouldn’t be that much longer, knowing Willie Mitchell, in my mind anyways.”

Yikes, talk about crap luck for the Canucks’ defenders this year. It’s remarkable, really, that they’re still in the playoff hunt…I wonder if they can limp into the post-season in this condition. Even if Bieksa makes it back early, will he get into game shape soon enough to make a difference? How long can Salo play 25+ minutes a night without his body committing total mutiny (again)? Something tells me we’re all going to be hating Mike Weaver and cursing Aaron Miller over the next couple of months, although it won’t really be their fault. Thank goodness Edler stepped up in a big way.

Do I have to really say it? OK I’ll do it…it’s Bourdon time. Sit him next to Edler and just pray. It beats McIver.

You’ve got that right, Jeremy—getting a job offer to play in Vancouver should really make a defenseman think twice…  it’s not a safe plan for one’s career these days.

And Yankee - your prayers have been answered. Bourdon was called up... as was Jaffray and Mike Brown. They’re on their way to Tampa.
