Mr. Smith Mystery

Buried in a short article in the Edmonton Journal was this tidbit from Jim Matheson yesterday:
SCOOP DU JOUR—The New Jersey Devils will sign former Oilers captain Jason Smith this summer when he’s an unrestricted free agent. Smith started his NHL career with the Devils.
At Spector’s Hockey, Lyle observes, “That’s possible, but I think such a signing would come after GM Lou Lamoriello has addressed his lack of scoring depth at center this summer.”
Fair enough, but it still makes me wonder…
For instance, most journalists wouldn’t make so certain a statement as Matheson does—he clearly trusts his source. So why does someone leak that information right now? It just seems interesting, especially given the two teams set to play the1/8 matchup in the first round of the playoffs. (Based on the standings today, anyway.)
So, is someone (i.e. Lamoriello) trying to fuel some drama?
We’re almost at playoff time and I’m in the mood for a conspiracy theory, dammit…
