Negativity in the Hockey Media

From Craig Simpson at CBC:

For many in the media world, it is often easy to sit back and take shots at the game. After all, a negative perspective on the game is much easier to come up with than finding a positive slant and it seldom needs any creativity to produce.

People love to complain, and many relish in other people’s failures. Unfortunately, it is a part of human nature.  I would much rather spend time and energy finding the good in people, and in this case, finding and talking about the good in our game.

I have to agree. And this reminds me of something (entirely unrelated to hockey) that a friend pointed out to me yesterday, about people who complain about everything:

It’s as old as communication itself. I’m sure that the moment man discovered fire, there was some guy nearby saying, “Too smoky. Can burn you. Lame.”

And that immediately reminded me of Al Strachan for some reason.  Go figure.

Of course, the galleries are full of critics because they “play no ball, they fight no fights ... Down in the arena are the doers.”

I don’t want to point out the obvious… but isn’t negativity what the news is all about?  Isn’t that why people watch it?

“If there’s not drama and negativity in my life, all my songs will be really wack and boring or something.” - Eminem smile

Aneesa— Probably a big part of it. (But then, probably a big part of being a fan, as well.) smile

LOUiE— You’re probably right.  And that is certainly the first time I’ve been quoted Eminem in a hockey context. wink
