Nothing Good Ever Came From Michigan

In the world of college sport, Michigan and its neighbors enjoy their trash talk. And even if it traumatizes a nice Canucks boy—as was the case last weekend—I’m always in support of Michigan getting trashed.
The papers are reporting Brendan Morrison’s distress as he witnessed his alma mater - the University of Michigan - get defeated in the NCAA football championships (whateverthehell, Brendan. college football? snooooore…). Regardless, it upset Mo, hence fun for others who sent him taunting text messages to amuse themselves after the defeat. Particularly Ryan Kesler:
“I called him the day it happened,” Kesler said. “I couldn’t stop laughing. It was pretty funny. Mo was pretty rattled about it.”
Morrison may have been rattled at the time but he has since recovered, at least based on his response Tuesday. “I received a lot of text messages but I couldn’t read Kesler’s because he can’t spell,” Morrison retorted. “He went to Ohio State, so…”
But GM Dave Nonis, who attended college in Maine, gets the final word: “I never have a hard time seeing Michigan lose no matter what sport it’s in.”
Amen.
I was looking at the Detroit Red Wings’ schedule today, and I say they go 3-5-1 in the pre-season. By the time Vancouver plays them home and home on October 24th and 28th, their confidence should be shattered and their souls hollow, making them easy pickings for Canucks’ scoring machines like Jeff Cowan and Brad Isbister.
And besides, that should be around that time that Crazy Hasek and his groin decide to take a month off. That boy’s equipment is living on borrowed time.

Ha! Perhaps. But at least I’m still sober. Once the season starts, I fear that I’m likely to get genuinely obnoxious.
I’m still playing “nice” for the moment…

Good thing for us Wings fans you’re stuck on a remote island in B.C. (You are stuck there, aren’t you?)
I can’t help imagining some type of Misery (or Saw—although I haven’t seen those) scenario if a hapless Detroiter should somehow wind up on your doorstep.

You think he’s traumatized by that, ask him how Michigan State did in hockey last year.
(NCAA champs, with the shortest and quickest goalie I’ve ever seen.)
(In other words, better than his Wolverines.)

A first…completely disagree with you. College football is as exciting as a sport can get.
Players who play all out for an entire game. Crowds that are completely into the game for the whole game…unlike the NFL (yawn), or even the NHL. I love it when crowds are just into the game…cheering, singing, chanting, stomping…LOUD. Sadly, professional sports fans tend to be boring in that regard.
College football brings out the same passion in people that you feel when you are talking Canucks/Wings rivalry. I love both of them…but college football tends to bring out even more passion in people…especially if you went to the school or have an affiliation with the school that is hard to break.
Go Ducks! (Oregon…not Anaheim!!)

I think you want a professional analogue to student sections, GZExpat. It would make it more fun, but I don’t see how it could work in the pro sports, unfortunately. Some of the student groups actually have tests and auditions to make sure that all their members know the right chants or songs and synchronized movements for the right times during a game, or they aren’t accepted as part of the group. You don’t see large groups of fans that organized at pro games in North America (although I’m not a soccer fan, and I’ve heard they can be pretty crazy, and not always in a good way).
Of course, discount tickets for students help to have the same people in the same seats game after game for the duration of their time at school. You don’t get the same kind of noise from the alumni. Often they network at the game and are as quiet as most pro fans because the game is a meeting place and not just a game to watch.
I’m still laughing because not only did UM get beat, they paid $400,000 for the opportunity to drop clear out of the rankings. Heh, heh, heh.

“I was looking at the Detroit Red Wings’ schedule today, and I say…”
Careful, Alanah..I think your subconscious may be setting you up for a Chris Chelios tattoo at the end of the season.
