Perverse Moments in Hockey Blogging

This isn’t your standard tug-the-heart-strings Happy Hockey Day story, but it is the one that’s given me the biggest laugh in all my years of hockey blogging.  (Just be warned: it’s a bit perverse!)

Back in October of 2003 when I started my first blog, women hockey-fan-bloggers were a rarity. In fact it was quite some time before I knew of any others out there, and this often made for some unique experiences. And sometimes unpleasant, too.

But while I’d get flamed by trolls once in a while, the vast majority of readers—male—were very nice. Like me, they enjoyed looking at hockey in the lighter-side-of way that I always preferred to write, and the emails & comments were usually pleasant and engaging.

But there was this one guy— I’ll call him “Jack”—who was a unique experience.

The deal with Jack was this:  He seemed to like my blog, he was generally nice to me, and I don’t ever recall him causing problems on the website.

But Jack wasn’t too sure of what to make of a chick with a hockey blog, either.

So one day, in an attempt to combine his interests—apparently women and hockey—he came up with what he thought might be the perfect surprise.  Jack decided to send me a photo of himself.

Now this might be considered simply friendly or even a bit flirtatious, and either is fine with me, but Jack decided to take it to a whole new level.

See, what Jack did was dress himself in nearly full hockey gear—shoulder pads, elbow protection, shin pads, helmet, socks—but decided to omit one rather important element: he didn’t bother to wear any clothes.

Yes, you heard that right.  No jersey, no hockey pants, no “protection”.  Just Jack and his padding, socks, a helmet , a stick, and a big old happy puppy grin on his face.

After the shock wore off (and I was shocked!) I’ve never stopped laughing about it.  Easily the funniest/craziest thing a reader of mine has ever sent me.

God knows whatever happened to Jack, but here’s hoping he figured out a better way to pick up girls. smile

P.S. Hockey is a wonderful sport and I love it, and hockey blogging itself has been full of all kinds of surprises for me.  I wouldn’t trade any of them.

Not even Jack. smile

Awesome story!

Reminded me of the latest How I Met Your Mother episode and the “Naked Man” strategy of getting girls in bed with you.

Works 2 out of 3 times!

Thanks!  And the “naked man” strategy—whatever that is—probably works a whole lot better if it doesn’t involve email. grin

Wow, I’m shocked. And a little bit disgusted and I think I threw up a little in my mouth. Clearly “Jack” is one of those interweb types who doesn’t get out much. Thanks for the morning laugh...I think.

TriniD -- Always happy to oblige your gag reflex!

Sarah -- I don’t remember. When some dude sends you a photo like that, even if he’s Brad Pitt, his relative attractiveness takes serious hit. grin

The forechecker , (hubs) told me about this post and thought I would enjoy it and I most certainly did laugh. Combining two things together sounds like a good idea at the time but… this just went wrong.  Thanks for the laugh!

Sarah -- I deleted that photo pretty promptly, I’m afraid.  But I’m sure if you ask for one on your blog, someone will accommodate you. smile

Amy -- Nice to ‘meet’ you! Glad you you got a laugh out of it. smile

Hilarious story, even if it does make me horribly embarrassed on behalf of my gender…
