Earlier today, Mats Sundin made it clear that his retire-or-not-to-retire decision is still up in the air, and will be for the foreseeable future. But is Canucks’ GM Mike Gillis worried? Nah. It’s simply time for Plan B.
And so today, the Canucks traded winger Ryan Shannon to the Senators for defenseman, Lawrence Nycholat. Fortunately, this helped address two of Vancouver’s biggest problems: too much scoring, and not nearly enough defensemen.

Unless he was acquired to be tossed in as part of another deal, this is really one of those, “What the hell?” trades.
The guy has 8 points in 31 games over five seasons, fer crying out loud.
If this is an indication of the season to come, it’s time to start stocking the liquor cabinet.

Sounds like another Nolan Baumgartner—the Moose might have pretty decent D this year. I’m sort of surprised that they gave up on Ryan Shannon. I know he didn’t exactly light it up last year, but it seemed like he had promise…and like you implied with sarcasm, shipping out a forward for a defenseman at this point seems odd. Although if the positions on this roster are correct, they’ve got way too many left-wingers.
