Planning Ahead

Allan Muir at Sports Illustrated offers a suggestion to boost Vancouver Canucks scoring needs:

GM Dave Nonis has to recognize that a window has opened up here that requires him to take a proactive approach. Sacrificing a piece of the future—defenseman Luc Bourdon appears expendable with the emergence of Alexander Edler—to add some bite to the forward unit is a must move. There’s no hurry, of course, but Nonis can’t be the one left looking for a chair when the music stops.

Bourdon might well be expendable to the Canucks, but—despite his likely future value—is any GM going to hand over a proven goal scorer for a rookie that’s yet to prove himself in any substantive way, and whose development has been constantly questioned? Bourdon’s trade value is difficult to predict, but Muir’s probably right assuming he’s up for grabs if the right deal came along.

Just no idea what that deal might be, and no good rumors either… where’s Spector when I need him?!

Couldn’t agree more on making a move for a top 6 forward preferably tough who can score. Unfortunately at least half the NHL is looking for the same thing so he won’t be cheap. I couldn’t disagree more with how to get one. Edler and Bourdon should be untouchable, cheap young players with skill and upside like these two should be kept at all cost! They allow us to spend big dollars elsewhere. What we should trade is an experienced defenceman like Salo or Ohlund. Love them both but both should have good trade value for say teams like the Penguins or the Rangers. I have no idea who’s available but I would think guys like that with decent contracts would look very good to many teams. My 2 cents.

Remember when the Canucks were doormats, like the Winnepeg doormats.  Allowed into the playoffs as fodder for teams like Edmonton and Clagary.

Remember when the Canucks were flying high as one of leagues “elite” teams, like Detroit.  The Canucks were actually the Mini-me of Detroit (see Stanley Cups won), and let’s face it that is the ultimate measure of ant team, championships.  Too bad Luango wasn’t around instead of Dan, don’t play me in the playoffs, I’ll choke.

Calgary 1, Colorado 1, Anaheim 1, Edmonton 5.

No wonder Vancouver fans have an inferiority complex deep down, like there Eastern counterparts, Toronto (read hot air & arrogance) they cannot win a Stanley Cup with a soft Swedish captain.

Just my opinions on things.  Let’s win a Stanley and have some real bragging rights!  Til then shaduup.

How you can slam Naslund at this time, when his play as of late has been nothing short of great, and he has contributed to the decent record the club already has?

I do wonder about the Bourdon situation, of course it isnt easy to predict his trade value but my guess is a few GM’s covet a young dman like him.

I like the idea to move one of Salo or Ohlund over moving a prospect.  However, with Edler’s emergence as a regular six D Man wouldn;t it be better to dangle him as trade bait.  Furhter, in my opinion, Bourdon will learn more and faster in the NHL.

I think the real asset in this equation is Bieksa rather than Bourdon. When Bieksa gets better we will definitely have a bloated blue line and Edler’s emergence makes Bieksa very tradeable with Bourdon waiting in the wings in case of injury. Perhaps Bieksa and Pyatt for a top 6 forward. That would give the Canucks a good offensive kick in the pants.
