Redesigning Jerseys—Almost Always a Bad Idea

Hockey Canada was excited today to unveil their new Team Canada jerseys to be worn in all upcoming international competitions, including this year’s World Championships and the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
Everyone should be nervous when they mess with jersey designs. (As any Canucks fan can tell you, it’s been known to go horribly wrong rather often.) So I was pleasantly surprised to see the officially-issued photos of the new style. Looks almost the same as it was before, really. No complaints here.
But then I saw them being ‘modeled’ on Team Canada members Patrick Sharp and Gillian Apps at the press conference…

Not great, not terrible… but don’t they look ‘wrong’ somehow, like they’re made out of paper?
They call it “retro-futuristic”— whateverthehellthatis. Personally, I suspect that’s just code for “lets-increase-our-jersey sales.”
Update 12:33pm PT: Some big name roster updates for Team Canada’s entry into the World Championships.

I think it means “In the near future, these will be retro, and there will be a new jersey out”.

On a side note, does it not seem that Gillian’s jersey is maybe a BIG on her? Did they find her in the crowd to through the females jersey on quick?

It does look big on her, actually. And Sharp’s might be a little small… maybe a mix-up!

I like the red one (obviously), I’m not too keen on the red shoulders on the white one, and the reason they look weird “on person” is because they’re Nike’s “Swift” jerseys, their version of the Reebok Edge, and the “Swift” is even more hated by players than the Edge because it’s tighter, has weird, unnatural seams, and is flimsy.

They look like the jerseys I got for my dek hockey team for $27. For $27 they were very nice. But they weren’t making anyone believe they belonged on any high profile national team.

At least they have horizontal stripes on the bottom of the sweaters and the sleeves aren’t too long.

Remember...there are no pads underneath...and at the lighting is bad (as though two flash photos were done at the same time...a bit washed out).
It’s worthy...buy two.

They do look flimsy - but sports uniforms look hilariously bad with a sport shirt underneath (and even funnier when you can see a tie as well).
There are only so many permutations of a maple leaf, anyway - just pick one and stick with it.

By defining these things as future retro, they are saying that in the future they will think that jerseys in the past were intentionally ugly?
