Sami Salo Out Indefinitely

The apparent wholesale slaughter of Canucks’ players yesterday doesn’t have a happy ending - at least not in the case of Sami Salo

From the Globe & Mail,

Vancouver Canucks defenceman Sami Salo is out indefinitely after sustaining a hairline fracture in his wrist in an intra-squad game in Victoria on Sunday.
Salo, who missed 15 regular-season games last season due to a variety of injuries, was hurt after being hit by teammate Jeff Cowan.
On Monday, Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault said Salo was too ‘nonchalant’ going into the corner prior to the hit.

(Also several updates below regarding Luongo…)

Interesting that the coach blames Salo for being non-chalant in his play, but no team official raises any fuss about Roberto Luongo’s frequent refusal to wear neck protection in practice.

Regardless, that does bring me to one piece of good news—the article also mentions that Luongo will likely be good to play Wednesday’s pre-season game against Calgary.

Small mercies…

Update 1:37pm PT:
Luongo’s comment to the CP (vis TSN) regarding the issue of wearing his throat protector…

‘‘I’m still pondering the idea,’’ Luongo told the Canadian Press. ‘‘I’ve got to see what’s more important, getting hit in the neck once or twice a year or letting in a couple of goals where you can’t find the puck in your feet.’‘

Well, since that “getting hit in the neck once or twice a year” thing could actually take you out of the game for weeks on end (not to mention the potential for serious damage), I think that I’d rather you just wore the freakin’ throat protection.

Geez…

Update 2:53pm PT:
From Grant Kerr at the Globe & Mail,

Roberto Luongo is one stubborn goaltender after taking another shot in the throat.  Luongo was back at practice Monday—without benefit of a plastic neck protector—after taking a shot in the neck Sunday during the annual blue-white Vancouver Canucks intra-squad game that completed the Victoria portion of this year’s training camp.

I don’t think “stubborn” is exactly the word that applies here… ugh.

How many lucky escapes does he figure he gets?

Is the arena built on (as they say in all the very worst bad movies) an “ancient Indian burial ground”?

Poor guys.  :(

It seems likely at this point.  Though I think in the entire history of the Vancouver Canucks organization, most evidence points to a major curse on this city.

Ah well… what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger? Or is it “What slowly kills our defensive core, makes our offensive talents seem even crappier”?

Sigh. I need a drink.

I think it should be modified.  “What does not kill us just causes us a great deal of pain…and may require a trip to the store for chocolate fudge!”

(Since I don’t drink. wink

Chocolate fudge is good, too. I like to support all the 12-Step programs as much as possible. smile

Yeah, Luongo certainly needs to wear the throat protector. He’s playing with rubber fire - get it? - if he doesn’t.

Good morning. Thank you all for being here. I just got a firsthand look at the terrible effects of the Squire fire. First I want to thank the fire crews, the men and women of Oregon and surrounding states who risk their lives to put these fires out. On behalf of a grateful nation, I want to thank you for your service to the country, and thank you for what you do.
