Sami Salo Signed for 4 Years!

From my trusty little TSN text alert I was informed that Sami Salo has signed a 4 year contract with the Canucks. Looking at TSN online, I see the story is true.

The Vancouver Canucks have signed defenceman Sami Salo to a four-year contract extension. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

‘‘We are pleased to have agreed to a long-term extension with Sami today,’’ said Canucks Senior Vice-President and General Manager Dave Nonis. ‘‘Sami is an elite defenceman who compliments our group very well. We are confident that he will continue to perform at the high level he has established for himself over the next four seasons.’’

Fantastic. I’m almost giddy with this one… very pleased.  See here for the Canucks Press Release.

We’ll find out terms of the deal shortly.  Details like that should be leaking like broken dam in a couple hours, I figure…

Update 6:00 pm PT:
The Vancouver Sun speculates the same thing that Trini mentions in the comments - that it’s likely to be worth $3.5 million a year, the same amount as Willie Mitchell’s current contract.

Now if we can just sign Brent Sopel...

Yay!!! Word has it that he signed 4 years at 3.5 mil. Pretty fair considering he was underpaid for a couple.

That is potentially 328 regular season games.  I wonder what the over/under is for games played… 265?

If we get 265 games out of Salo the next four years, it will be worth it.

Less of a cheer…more of a collective sigh of relief.

But…we’ll need to hear how much…because someone may have to go, given the salaries they are carrying right now (Naslund, Luongo, Ohlund, Morrison, Kessler).

Nonis is earning his keep.

So does this mean we aren’t resigning Sopel now?  Or it is still possible that Nonis will fit him under the cap somehow.

It would appear that Trini is right… a 4 year deal probably means about $3.5 per. (And I’ve added a link above mentioning the same information being speculated in the Vancouver Sun tonight).

Btw, I remember saying that EXACT number on the podcast a while back. (Go me!)  On the other hand, I see no reason to go back and verify I made that claim. That would be petty of you. wink

I like Salo a ton for his skill and his shot. And while the tendency towards injuries is worrisome, he’s still worth it if he fulfills even 3/4 of the games over the next 4 years.

Sopel will have to take a pay cut to remain in Vancouver.  I think he is willing to do so, but if the cap goes up by 4 million, and Nonis manages to free up space via trades, there should be no reason why Sopel won’t return next year.  Nonis has said all along he wasn’t interested in “rental players”, so let’s see if he meant it.

This killed me, I was hoping the Avs would make a run at him in the offseason
