Summer Song Diversion

Because Greg is the devil (he’s an Avs fan, for chrissakes) he’s dropped me into a meme: five favorite songs.

I love music but I can’t be sold on the idea of “favorites”—too tough to narrow it down.  So what I propose instead is something far easier for me: the 5 WORST songs you can play anywhere in my vicinity.  They’re older tunes so they’ve had a chance to irritate me for far longer, thus impossible to avoid adding to this list.

Click the links and experience the YouTube videos of Alanah’s personal version of hell:

1. Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” (*Lemieux sang this to Sidney Crosby a few weeks ago, I understand.)
2. Hall & Oates “Maneater”
3. Taylor Dane’s “I’ll Always Love You”
4. Motley Crue’s “Girls, Girls, Girls”
5. Journey’s “Open Arms”

Greg - and Brushback, since he started this - are absolutely required to watch every one of these videos from start to finish.  (And I’ll know if you didn’t, gentlemen. I’ll be testing you later.)

Allow me to spread the joy… I’ll tag Chuqui and The Chief Canuck.

Sweet geezus… kill me now…

(But if you really feel that way, I hope you’ll record us an audio of you singing that little tune. I’ll definitely consider that worth listening to!)

What about George Michael “I Want Your Sex”?  That has to be someone’s worst song.  (Besides one of mine, I mean.)

That is funny.  I just sent the link to the Astley song to a friend a few days ago with a note saying “Did we really live through this sh*t?”  Horrible, horrible song.  Horrible, horrible video.  I would nominate nearly anything by Jackson Browne, including the most horrifically forgetable “Lawyers in Love.”  I call his top hit “Dronin’ on Empty,” because it fits.

I agree whole heartedly with your least favourites Alanah. I’d like to add “Sussudio” by Phil Collins and “Oh blah di oh blah da” by the Beatles. The last one is purely due to the fact that I hear that damn song at every Canucks home game. Someone should really fire the DJ - he sucks.

I’ve watched two of the videos so far. I’ll have to build my strength up before I watch the rest.

Baroque— You’re correct - a shit song if ever there was one. But there is one difference between that song and those on my list: I’ll confess to actually dancing to the George Michael tune when it played in clubs.  But those on my list made my ears bleed from earliest memory. smile

Bob— Astley is truly an abomination. Jackson Brown qualifies as pretty awful, but there are one or two (can’t remember them now) songs of his I actually like at some point. (Perhaps I shouldn’t confess that…?!)

Trini— You just made me consider the idea of ANY of the songs on my list being played in GM Place during a hockey game. What an unbelievably horrifying thought.  Perhaps I should say a prayer now.

Greg— You’ve got three more to go; have a shot of scotch and continue marching on through the musical wasteland of my youth. You can do it…

Oh, I thought of a couple more—“My Angel is a Centerfold” and “Get Out of my Dreams, Get into my Car.”

I guess those are more insanely annoying than horrible, though.  Catchy as an influenza virus.

When it first came out, I used to sing along to that song as “Never Gonna Have Another Hit.”  Rick Astley’s career did last a bit longer than that, unfortunately.

I did karaoke once.  I got stuck with some bloated Natalie Merchant tune that I didn’t know, and totally screwed it up. I think I could’ve pulled off “Girls, Girls, Girls”, though.

Rebecca— If Astley makes you laugh (or show any signs of joy whatsoever)  then our continued friendship depends on me knowing that you are, in fact, drunk out of your skull.

Baroque— I bet you just love  horror movies, lady. “Get outta my dreams…” is clearly the theme music to a first-rate horror flick.

Brushback— Girls, Girls, Girls… yeah, I’m thinking you could pull it off. HOWEVER… I want to hear you do the Natalie Merchant thing now. Badly. Really, really badly….

I always thought Astley’s “Together Forever” was worse!

Aren’t they both versions of the same song?  I remember a lot of reverb, like he was singing in a shower with a lot of tile.  Now I’m getting flashbacks.  smile

And I like old bad horror movies (rubber monster Godzilla, “The Blob” with Steeve McQueen), but the new gory stuff is just gross.  My favorite movies are Casablanca and Philadelphia Story, though.

Alanah, you forgot the worst song ever written or recorded: Starship’s We Built This City.

Why does “We Built this City” get such a bad rap? I know it was a far cry from what Starship had done in the hippy years, but the tune is groovy.

Starship wasn’t THAT bad.  “We Built this City” was a really catchy, upbeat tune.

What about Debbie Gibson, if you want bad music?

Or anything off that Donny Osmond solo album—the one where they made a big deal about him wearing a leather jacket on the cover?

Lots of shitty songs are upbeat and catchy. (Never Gonna Give You Up, for example.)

I just think We Built This City really sets the standard for corniness - the song, lyrics, and video are all cheesy as hell. Plus it was WAAAAY overplayed.

If I may, a reminder:

I couldn’t make it past 1:20.

OK—I will give you the overplayed part, definitely.

I never saw the videos of most of these songs—my parents didn’t have cable when I was a kid, so I was stuck with PBS.  That insulated me from some of the dreadfullness.

Oh yeah, the “we Built This City” video is corny as hell!
It’s amazing watching that video and then watching them at Woodstock 69 kicking butt.

Hey, great. I still haven’t watched the rest of the videos, but Alanah can take comfort knowing that I’ll be driven irrevocably insane with “We Built This City” stuck in my head.

Can’t believe no one’s mentioned canada’s own homegrown heartbreaker, Hart (as in Corey). Just saying the words “I wear my sunglasses at night” in my mind is guaranteed to have that tune sit in my head for a day and it won’t go away… like something out of clockwork orange.
