Sundin Positioning Himself For a Job

“Yes, it is actually impossible to predict, but I hope and believe that Detroit wins. And they do in six matches.”

—Mats Sundin, Vancouver Canucks (quote via Nucks Misconduct)

Translation: “Dear Ken Holland: I’m desperate to sign with your team this summer. Let’s talk!”

Although someone did just rip off a supply of his signed Canucks’ jerseys not too long ago, so if he wanted to stay he can at least assume that he’s still popular with Vancouver fans.

Well, to those comfortable with committing crimes, anyway.

I ‘hope and believe’ that Ken Holland won’t touch Mats Sundin with a 10 foot pole unless he signs for a million bucks.

Ha!. Only in hockey do we say things like “signs for a million bucks” and consider that lowballing the guy. smile

What a tool this guy is. I’m so tired of these “rent a players” who think they deserve a Cup just by picking the right team.

This is the Ray Bourque syndrome. A player has a great career without a Stanley Cup,he knows the media will always bring up the “but he never won a Stanley Cup” when talking about him. So they play the last few years going from one top team to another. To me it’s kind of phony. The trophy is more than just the skate around the arena after the deciding game. It’s the whole journey as a team. Like the Red Wings of today, or the Oiler’s and Islanders of the 80’s. Now I know in todays game the smart teams supplement their rosters with free-agents now and then, but some of these players act as if the conquered the devil when all they did is hitch their wagon to a great team. Not all Stanley Cup Rings are created equal. And Ray Bourque has stated he was going to retire his last season no matter what heppened in the final series. For some reason I just don’t beleive him. They should just go to a jeweler and have a ring made it won’t mean much less. I hope the Red Wings say no way to “Dundin”

It is a Ray Bourque syndrome for sure. All honor is dead.
But trust me, Mats is not positioning himself to play for the Wings. He is cheering for a team that has a buttload of Swedes on it is all. Salming is routing for the Wings too.

But if Sundin signed it Detroit and won the Cup next year (a huge “if”) I would cry tears of joy for the guy.

Or talk about Hossa “settling” for “only” $7.45 million for the year.

I’d settle for that for a year and never ask for another contract or anything - but I’m crappy at hockey, so no luck for me.  (sigh)

Doesn’t surprise me, either.  Most of the Swedish national team is playing for Detroit right now.
