Sundin, the Canucks and Pile of Money…

From the wild world of hockey rumors, Bruce Garrioch reports:

The Vancouver Canucks are after Mats Sundin.  League sources told Sun Media the Canucks have offered the Toronto captain a two-year, $20 million deal.

Sundin hasn’t decided on his future, but he’s contemplating it.

Fan590’s Howard Berger just mentioned the same thing. (thanks to readers for sending this one in!)

Insanity.

12:05pm PT: That Vancouver is the team that offered this deal to Sundin is also now being reported on TSN television.

3:22pm PT: J.P. Barry, Sundin’s agent, states on FAN590 that his client has received nine offers today which he’s considering. He states that money is not the most important factor (clearly, if he’s hesitating at this insane Canucks offer) and that Toronto is also still a possibility.  Barry also says that Sundin isn’t certain he will return to the NHL at all yet, which is part of what’s taking him some time to figure out.

Way too much money for Sundin, what in the hell is Gillis thinking.

I hope Sundin goes elsewhere.

Right, like HockeyJoe said… Garrioch, eh?

If it is true that they made this offer, it’ll tell us if Sundin just wants money, or wants to win a Cup.

Just depends who is more nuts: Garrioch or Gillis? I can’t quite decide…

If they do pay him $10M on a multi-year contract, they have to change the team’s name to the CaNuts!

Verification word: floor19. And I’m guessing Stevie Y is on the floor right now laughing his ass off at this offer.

We certainly know that Garrioch is more reckless and only cares about getting a “scoop” and his name in bloggerville headlines.

If someone else with a reputation to uphold reports this, then I’ll buy it.  ‘Til then Alanah, I think you can keep your Canuck senses about you.

Indeed. And my opinion of Garrioch rumors isn’t a big secret... wink

When you look at how many teams could actually afford that type of contract, it has to be one of 4 locations...NY Rangers, Vancouver, LA, Florida, Colorado, Columbus, Buffalo, Atlanta and maybe Montreal...that being said, where would it make sense?  Montreal is looking to win now, and Sundin would definitely help, Rangers always look to make a splash, Vancouver needs to to add offence, but they need more than just a center.  Columbus needs to add a big C for Nash, and Sundin would be huge there, they also need to make the playoffs.  Atlanta needs to give Kovalchuk someone to play with, and Florida might want to replace Jokinen.  Of all of these situations, where would Mats like most to go to?  Well only he knows for sure, but we can debate it.  I think the best spot to win now, is Montreal.  Although, the lure of the big Apple could be to big to pass up.  Still, I like the idea of Atlanta, Florida, or Columbus to pull it off...they do need to get up to a minimum of $40 million in salary cap spent, and I think to give Sundin $10 million, while too much, makes more sense to me then a Avery at $4 million, which is what has been making the rounds in a deal for him to join the Leafs...should be interesting.

I started with 4 locations, but it turns out there are quite a few teams that could take on that contract, but that is only on paper…

But why would the Rangers need him as they just inked two centers for big money last year (Gomez and Drury).

Right now, Montreal seems to be the best fit for him if he wants to win now. Vancouver, while it would be appealing for Mats to possibly be slotted between the Sedins, but may require a position change to wing for either Mats or Henrik Sedin.

Sundin at that price would be just about the worst thing. Ever.

Nobody in the current CBA is worth that money.

That is crazy.

I would have rathered seen the ‘nucks put $10m/year on Hossa than on Sundin. Sundin is a spent force.. this is like the Messier deal all over again. :/

That is more money than Crosby and Ovie make per season...in case you were wondering…

I hear that argument all the time with UFA, but logic doesn’t come into it here...You have a chance to better your team, so if you have the money under the cap to spend, why not?  No compensation, no draft picks, just money.  I have a much bigger problem with the length of term for these deals.  The point is, when you see your division rival bulking up, you have no other choice in most cases, then to ramp it up.  The GM’s almost play keeping up with the Jones’ at this time of year.  In looking at it that way, what does it matter what Crosby or Ovechkin are making.  Look at what Huet just got...is he better than Martin Brodeur?  Look at what Brian Campbell just got, is he better than Nick Lidstrom?  You go out and address your teams needs, and lose your mind in the process…

He’s already decided to go to Detroit for $2 Million a year for one year to win a cup.  They’ll restructure contracts and still have room under the cap to sign another left winger.  It’s a done deal stop speculating.
