Baroque—who contributes her entertaining genius frequently to the comments of this website, as well as her own posts at HockeyTownTodd—made a comment on this post yesterday that stuck in my head. She said, “It’s funny how people fall for hockey that you wouldn’t expect to.”
Earlier today I was sorting through the piles of junk on my hard drive and I came across this article I’d kept handy from the LA Daily News. Written by Tom Hoffarth, it was originally published in January of this year.
I think it’s a great story and it relates to Baroque’s remark rather well so I thought I’d point to it now. Enjoy.

Baroque is a woman?! I’ve been reading her insightful comments for a long time and never knew that. Duh.

w2j2 and Jennifer - glad you guys enjoyed it as much as I did.
Jeremy - I’m sure you’re not alone. Besides, I have a feeling she’ll forgive you.

I was expecting some story about an unlikely celeb with a secret hockey habit - but instead you dished up an entirely unexpected, heartwarming and tear-inducing story
That’s just amazing isn’t it
I wonder how hockey even got onto her radar?? I spent a month every year down in Florida for 10 years (visiting from England) and I never once registered they had NHL teams down there - they just don’t make any noise about them - I assumed California would be much the same.
And she clearly wasn’t picking it up from her family.
What a mystery - but how wonderful that somehow it did get through to her, and she was able to communicate that to her parents and end up seeing her team win.
I’m welling up again

Got a little dirt in my eye while reading that. Or maybe a sudden onset allergy? Yup, allergies, that must be it.
Wonderful story, thanks Alanah.

Very cool story.

Flo -- Definitely mysterious how hockey got on her radar. I suppose it goes to show how observant children are, that she spotted the game briefly somewhere along the way (a TV ad spot advertising a Kings game maybe?) and fell in love with it.
Take care of those allergies, James.
I’m glad everyone liked the story.

That’s because I don’t sound like a dizzy, airhead puck-bunny!
You’re not the first to make that mistake - as long as no one is dim enough to think I’m a guy if they see me in person, I don’t mind having mistakes like that made on the interweb.
Very sweet story. Glad to see the team won for her, too.

I think it was on Tom Benjamin’s blog that I first started reading and appreciating your comments, Baroque—and it certainly makes no difference to your appreciative readers...but I guess I thought I would have been tipped off to that tidbit at some point. Oh well.
