Voting Vezina

John Buccigross makes his picks, and…
Vezina Trophy (best goalkeeper)
Who votes: NHL general managers; Last season’s winner: Martin Brodeur (New Jersey)Bucci’s winner: Roberto Luongo, Vancouver Canucks. Boy, this is a tough call. Luongo and Brodeur have statistics that mirror each other. Evgeni Nabokov is showing Stanley Cup-winning, Conn Smythe-winning caliber play. But it just seems that Luongo has the most stress put upon his shoulders to go along with his great play. He has been great in regulation, overtime and the shootout. His team’s nightly efforts rely mostly on his play, probably more than any other goalie.
Seriously? A major Canucks-homer here, and even I’m picking Brodeur for this one. (Well, I would, if someone in the NHL would smarten up and give me my own team to Generally Manage.)
But that being said, Luongo should have won last year.

*goes to visit the Rangers in 10th….*
What the hell…where are they? Oh…right…they have Lundqvist.
Arguably been the best goalie in the league on a team with no defence. Could be a point to be on the Hart ballot, but won’t be.

I’m pickin’ Evgeni Nabokov this year. He’s been brilliant as the number one guy and he’s played 71 freakin’ games. He’s a machine!

I’ll have to agree with the general sentiment here—the Vezina is not a discussion limited to Luongo or Brodeur, by any means. Personally, I was just limiting myself to Buccigross’s options because I was being lazy.
But even considering the other excellent choices… I’m still pretty persuaded by Brodeur. Far more this year than I’ve ever been in the past.
I guess I’m feeling argumentative. So now: tell me all the reasons I’m wrong!

I’ll have to agree with Trini. I vote Nabokov.

Count me as another vote for Nabakov. He’s been the most steady and consistent player on the team from day 1, and as good as Thornton has been I’m not even sure it’s that close. The Sharks are rolling now and making it look easy at times, but Nabby stole them some games early to get them into this position. I also don’t really see how the rest of the team should factor into the equation too much. For the Hart I think it’s a huge factor, but the Vezina is for the best goalie not the most valuable. You can’t blame Nabakov for the fact that Doug Wilson surrounds him with more talent than the Devils or Canucks have provided for their goalies.

Nabokov. He and Joe kept the Sharks afloat until they kicked it into high gear in February.
