I actually found this pretty surprising. Wade Flaherty, largely a career AHLer and a reliable fixture on the Manitoba Moose in recent seasons, has elected not to retire this summer, but instead has signed with a new team. He joined the Chicago Blackhawks organization today.
From the press release:
The 39-year old Flaherty played last season for the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League. Originally selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft, Flaherty had enjoyed NHL stints with San Jose, the New York Islanders, Tampa Bay, and Nashville. In 120 career games, Flaherty owns a 27-55-9 record with five shutouts and a 3.51 goals against average. He has also appeared in seven career playoff games (2-3, 4.93 GAA).
Best of luck to a homegrown BC goalie who keeps defying the odds with a rich and healthy career going into his 20th season since being drafted into the NHL.
You can read more about Flaherty on his Legends of Hockey profile.
P.S. Prestin Ryan, a Moose player himself for the last two seasons, has also been signed by the Hawks today. Ryan played one game for Vancouver in the 2005-06 season.
