Wednesday with the Canucks—Wellwood is Your Salvation

  • Canucks claim Kyle Wellwood off waivers from the Leafs. Thoughts? He’s an RFA on July 1st. [TSN]
  • With Curtis Sanford still unsigned to warm Luongo’s bench for next season, Ben Kuzma at the Province (via the National Post) is pondering Alex Auld returning to Vancouver. (We did a poll on this subject a few weeks ago—60% of you liked the idea.)
  • Speaking of surplus goalies, Cory Schneider has been blogging the last few days, including the revelation that he doesn’t have a big sister—he just lied about that. (That’s part of what they call “team building” in Vancouver these days. Geez, I love it when players blog.)

  • The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review thinks there’s something to the rumors of Hossa-or-Malone-to-Vancouver.  Maybe it’s possible, maybe it’s not—all I know for sure is that every UFA rumor that comes along is going to feature the Canucks as a contender in the near future. It’s not like the team can pull a trade to save its life right now… (One comment on FanNation: “The idea of getting Hossa there...well that just sounds like a lot of Maloney to me.” Cute.)

But for all the things to be concerned about, at least the Canucks’ owner isn’t one of those dudes that might be better suited to prison stripes. Though perhaps one day…

A journalist/writer friend sends us this comment today for your consideration:

“I’m telling you, as long as Aquilini owns the team (and he’s still a slumlord here btw) we will remain in the dark ages. He is loathed in local business circles, and it would seem, he’s hired a guy who’s likewise in the NHL.”

Canucks fandom is a special thing, isn’t it?  Here’s a slogan idea: No One’s Been Arrested Today.

Catchy. I can dance to that.

Ahhhh it’ll be great to watch Welly in VanCity… I expect he’ll hate playing for Vigneault.  Strange pick up, but thanks, from a Leafs fan!

I’ve heard that he has talent, but not much motivation - from time to time guys like that really get a wake-up call at the thought that they might not be able to get anyone to pay them to play hockey anymore and they might have to get a regular, normal, boring job like regular people.

The horror!  The horror!

The shock is sometimes enough to get them to improve their work ethic.

When I think “Wellwood” I think “zippy little guy.” Maybe he’s not that little, but that’s the phrase that comes to mind.  And I like zippy little guys. smile

Well Baroque, the guy’s been playing for the Leafs. I think it’s a wonder he’s even been able to get out of bed every morning.  wink

(Sorry, Karina! But feel free to take the same shot at the Canucks… I certainly do!)

No really, he is that little.  His nickname on the Leafs was Frodo - as much for his size as his resemblance to Elijah Wood.

I hope he does well with the Canucks, but I have big doubts.  Two sports hernias last year, a few weeks ago he broke his foot, and he’s never been very fit so he will have to work very, very hard to be ready for the season.  If he does that, the Canucks will have a gem, but he’s still very soft.  But if he does show up, his creativity will be very refreshing for Canucks Fans.

He certainly looks out of shape with the photo making its rounds at CDC.

Too bad he is such a soft player, but he is creative.

Maybe the Canucks could adapt that and use it in their season-tickets campaign: “Buy your tickets today and be among the first to receive email alerts if anyone in the organization is arrested.” grin

Now that’s an advertising campaign I can get excited about. They can sell it as “Excitement On the Ice and Off!” smile

Wellwood is freakin’ made of glass. Yes he’s got potential but he’s lazy. He becomes invisible A LOT. Here’s hoping he picks up his game a little for the Canucks.
On the bright side; at least if Bob Cole or Harry Neale are still broadcasting next year they’ll be able to pronounce at least one name on the Canucks roster!

Here’s what I think of Auld - PASS. Why not sign Sanford again?

“Wellwood is freakin’ made of glass.”

Those are some harsh words in a league where Marion Gaborik still plays! smile

As for Auld, I agree. I like both players fine, but I think Sanford deserves first crack at the job.  He did nothing to knock himself out of consideration.

Maybe he’s a natural for Colorado, then - if Forsberg retires, they will have an open slot for a glass hockey player.

Wellwood, to the Canadian Press:

“I don’t think I have anything to prove to the Leafs. They’ve seen me play and I played well for them at some points. I definitely have something to prove to the Canucks and to myself. I have something to prove to myself.”

Article also includes a deeper explanation from Wellwood about the state of his Glass Groin and related rehabbing issues.

One thing that Wings fans can always hold onto is the knowledge that the draama (not a typo) will always be on the ice. The only off-ice draama that I can happening in Detroit is someone claiming that Mr. I wears a rug. Lying scumbags! grin

maple laughs dumped him for a reason.  softness is contagious. nucks better keep him quarantined in manitoba. also the nepotism pick of morgan clark (goalie coach’s son) sucks. it’s a late pick, but a wasted pick is a wasted pick.
