When 47 Saves isn’t Good Enough…

... you’ve got problems. And when it takes 47 saves to lose a game, Roberto Luongo can be forgiven for thinking he’s playing for the Florida Panthers again.
Ed Willes at The Province might want to re-think his assessment yesterday:
Before Luongo arrived in the wake of the 2005-‘06 squad’s collapse, Canucks fans would have been satisfied with a competitive team. With Luongo, there is a belief that, if management surrounds the goalie with the right personnel, a Stanley Cup is possible.
Well sure, it’s possible, but when it comes to surrounding the goalie with “the right personnel,” that’s easier said than done.
If only someone would start up and run with a solid “Hossa to Vancouver” rumor—even if utter b.s., it would still be cheerful to ponder.
Anyway, luckily for everyone, the brain trust on the Canucks message boards breaks down the problem of goal scoring with it’s usual insightful wisdom: it’s not that the Canucks can’t score, it’s that they don’t celebrate properly.
canucksarethebestbaby:
“Whenever the Canucks score there seems to be no excitement from the players. Some players like Burrows and Kesler will show the excitement just because they dont score much, but Nazzy just skates into the circle of players and taps them on the head. Why can’t the players skate by the bench and tap everyones hand like most teams do. We need more enthusiasm in our goals.”cyclone:
“that hate sex”eternal captain:
“scoring makes baby Jesus sad”
Are we calling Alain Vigneault “baby Jesus” now? Figures.
P.S. Photo below was found on Canucks.com but appears to have been taken by Dave Reginek for Getty Images. A bit of a downer, but still a great shot.

And on the occasion of the captain’s 1000th NHL game…

Well sure, but the problems with that is pointed out right in that article:
Two big “ifs” are holding back any Sundin deal: His reluctance thus far to waive his no-trade contract, and the price-tag that teams are willing to pay the Leafs for his short-term service. It’s believed clubs such as the Canucks would be more open to a trade if Sundin committed to play for his new team beyond the spring and at least through 2008-09.
Hornby then goes on to suggest the Leafs would want Corey Schneider or Luc Bourdon, two players the Canucks have banked a lot on for the future.
Picking up Hossa or anyone else really presents the same problem, I guess. Perhaps Nonis is hoping for Anson Carter to return…

Sundin HAS to make the public statements about the no trade clause.
If he didn’t it would be an even bigger circus.
Sundin isn’t stupid. He could make the leafs better by leaving for a few months then be the hero and come back in the summer with a new contract.
Hossa may be a better route.
I am sure frustrated with Naslund. Even more so after attending a few games in person. You watch him away from the puck, he seems disinterested. Even last night when there was a 3-1 developing and Cowan had the puck and didn’t dish to Naslund. Nazzy just stopped skating and the play fizzled. Yes, cowan should have sent Nazzy the puck but you don’t just stop skating.

Hey, I hear the Canucks are going to make a trade for Marcel Hossa.

Ryan— I don’t think Toronto could possibly become a bigger circus. It’s like a pack of wild dogs running around there—media to team management—and they’re in one giant brawl. ![]()
I thought Naslund was skating well much of the season, but you’re right, there are times lately that he reminds me of last year. And since I generally attribute that time to lingering injury, do you think that’s what’s happening again? It makes me wonder…
Tapeleg— When you make stuff up, the idea is to cheer me up, not depress me!

Nah, it’s neither, Naslund is just getting old. I’m also sure he misses the run-and-gun days of the “Big Line”, now there’s a team that could have won back-to-back cups with Luongo.
Different time and place, but that team filled the net and was a contenda. I say all this and I am an Oilers fan. The Oilers and Canucks had some good tilts in those days too.
Let’s keep the cup in the west, just not in Calgary!
