Who Will Be the Last Men Standing?

Down to the wire with two games left, Nashville and Vancouver are duking it out for the #8 spot in the only playoff-like contest one of these teams is going to experience this spring. Which makes every game into ‘must see’ hockey.
Perfect timing then, to lose my cable & internet connection for 4 freakin’ days. Thus: no hockey games, no hockey news, no hockey emails, no hockey video highlights…
No hockey at all. Nada.
It was the best 96 hours of my life.
But alas, all good things must come to an end, and Shaw Cable was good enough to have everything in perfect working order in time for last night’s Vancouver/Colorado game. (And thank God. It would’ve been tragic to miss that...)
But to the question: Will the Vancouver Canucks make the playoffs?
It’s an argument that keeps sucking every fan into its vortex and it’s only going to drive them insane.
I swear, I’m off that crazy train. The verdict will be whatever it is, and Canucks fans should just prepare for both options: plentiful heart medication and booze if they make it; or, an alternate team to align ourselves with if they don’t. (*Note -- the more self-destructive the team, the better. For reliable post-season implosions, I personally favor either the Dallas Stars or the Ottawa Senators. Other suggestions?)
Back to Colorado vs Vancouver, I can’t imagine why anyone thought there was a snowball’s chance in Denver that the Canucks were going to win that game, anyway.
First off, it was April Fool’s Day, for chrissakes. Betting on the Avs for that game was guaranteed to make me a very rich Canucks fan. It was just a no-brainer.
Secondly, there’s a pattern to consider here: win a game, lose a game; (or win 1, lose 6… whichever) has been a matter of course for a while now. We can’t know what this team is going to do one period to the next, much less one game to the next. If anything, smoking Calgary Sunday night was nearly a predictor of disaster last night.
Two more games left, and the Canucks have the harder schedule (Edmonton/Calgary) compared to the Predators (St. Louis/Chicago), but that doesn’t mean squat, either.
I wouldn’t bet on either of those Vancouver games, other than to say that the Canucks will win one of them FOR SURE—probably Thursday’s against Edmonton—just to keep the pain alive.
(How much easier it must be to be a Wings fan?! Crap.)
Update 12:55pm PT -- Entirely unrelated to the whining above, but it seemed like a good idea to bring some light to the darkness:
The American Hockey League announced today that Manitoba Moose center Brad Moran has been named the CCM/AHL Player of the Month for March. Moran tallied five goals and 16 assists for 21 points in 13 games to help the Moose to a 10-1-0-2 record last month.

Great googly moogly, Alanah, I was worried about you when there weren’t any posts the last few days. That’s right, I said it, an Avs fan was concerned for the well-being of a Canucks fan. Therapy does work!
Why waste envy on Detroit fans? Look at it this way: As you emerge from your suicide booth and start to rediscover the Mary Poppins side of life, their agony will only be beginning. Heartened by 1 or 2 series victories (including, perhaps, one over the too-streaky Avs), fans will start to think the Boneless Wings actually have “it” this year. Paraphrasing one of our presidential candidates, they’ll have the audacity to hope. And then that hope will be crushed like the Dominator’s decrepit hip/groin/other fragile body parts. Multiply your heartache by 1,000, then square it and add 19. That’s how horrid their emotions will be.
Does that make you feel a little better?

Amy, you are spot-on regarding Wing’s fans. We know all too well how many ways there are to get eliminated from the playoffs. Just peruse the last 2 or 3 columns on Able-to-Yzerman to read our minds. The “Stress Train” is standing-room- only!
The Av’s situation right now is precarious.
I have seen no mention of the fact that Roberto became a new father less than a week ago. As a human being, the emotions of that event, and being (what, 2000 miles?) away from my wife and new daughter would make it extremely difficult to focus on a hockey puck.
Emotional calmness, lack of distraction, and total focus are probably more important to a goalie than anyone else in sport.

Devin -- A place of bitter acceptance? It sounds like you’re in need of an intervention or something.
Amy -- Your therapy has done wonders - I need to see your shrink for myself, apparently.
As for the future pain of the Wings, that most definitely cheers me up. (Unfortunately, I feel that way about the potential pain of nearly every WC Playoff team right now. If the Canucks get knocked out, I know I’ll be a sore loser… It’s just my way.)
w2j2 -- Enough. My “stress train” trumps your stress train any day of the week. You don’t know stress!!!!

Alanah, my shrink’s name is Jack. Daniels. He’s amazing.
w2j2, you’re right - the Avs are in, but I fear they’re too streaky to get far unless they become the surprise team that catches fire in the playoffs. Not holding my breath at the moment.
I don’t envy your ride on the stress train, although I do enjoy reading about it! The Chief’s an awesome writer and he makes me laugh despite his misguided hockey allegiance. (See? Therapy.)

Jack Daniels. Excellent.
Amazing the progress of modern psychiatry. I sincerely approve.

...fans will start to think the Boneless Wings actually have “it” this year.
Isn’t it amazing how those who’ve lost all hope think those who have talent and, yes, let’s admit it, grit, just might take on the Goons of the West and waltz their way into this year’s prom.
As for the Canucks, if it wasn’t for the fact that The Cherubic One is such a doll, I’d hope they collapse like a Jenga stack. As it is, I hope they fight right to the end and then, with grace, exit stage west to allow the Wings to face their “arch enemy” the hapless Preds in the first round.
When your time in the Suicide Booth expires, Oh Cherubic One, don’t desert us here at KK (geez, those are bad initials). We love your wit, your enthusiasm and, well, all of that wild hair. Yum!

It’s good to see that you are taking this all so well. No reports of broken furniture or cats embedded in walls.
The Canucks have been counted out for so long that it seems crazy to me. Does everyone really believe that perennial tankers Nashville can hold out? Onw point out isn’t much.
Until it isn’t.

and I thought you actually did throw yourself under the bus. I was shocked by the video here.

Hmmm… certainly a goalie would know that better than anyone, too. So did Luongo consciously throw his team’s season under the bus way back in June by choosing procreation over playoffs?
If he were playing in Toronto instead of Vancouver some classless schmuck reporter probably would think that’s the only logical conclusion and asked him that by now.

OlderThanChelios -- You’re sweet, but I’m not going anywhere. Aside from posting on the main KK hockey page through the playoffs, even if the Canucks were to get knocked off this week, I have about 4 months worth of ranting stored up about my team. (Hell, 2 months might be dedicated to Vigneault, alone...)
It makes me dizzy, plotting out all the ways I want to complain!
Tapeleg -- Well, I’ll thank GOD you hadn’t heard about what happened to the cat.
Laker -- Geezus, that video… You’re. Killing. Me.
BobTheZee -- Sadly, it would seem that I’m even worse than the Toronto media then. I believe I already advocated something on that subject last week.

Nuh uh, you’re just fine. You just proposed an NHL Knock-Up Policy. Toronto media would have actually asked Roberto about it.
