Canucks Retire All Their Fans; Oilers are Confused Into Submission

More about the big win momentarily. First up, the fuss about the number 7 this past week was finally sorted out Saturday night:

imageThe Vancouver Canucks are pleased to announce the launch of the “7th Canuck” initiative to celebrate the passion of Canucks fans and their role in supporting the team over the years. Prior to each home game, one individual will act as an ambassador of Canucks fans and unveil the “7th Canuck” banner to symbolize the home-ice advantage Canucks fans provide to the team.

A great idea and a nice gesture—but there was still a bit of confusion out there.

Opening Night Lights Up Vancouver

imageLast April, Vancouver finished the 2007-08 season with a dreary 7-1 loss to the Calgary Flames. This year they opened their new season by returning the favor, handing the Flames a 6-0 beating

The pre-game ceremony honoring Luc Bourdon was emotional (as expected) and a well done affair by the Canucks.  And Tom Cochrane’s Big League was the perfect tribute. (You can watch the video the Canucks produced here; to see the whole ceremony at GM Place, go here and fast forward about 2 minutes).

It was a bit of an emotional-overload transitioning from that to watching a hockey game, but once we did, what a great game it was.  Here are some meandering observations:

And then the news wasn’t so good…

Coincidence or cosmic bad humor?  Earlier today Roberto Luongo was named captain of the Vancouver Canucks, rather against the odds.  Which made it a pretty good day for the celebrated goalie—except for this:

On the same day that the Vancouver Canucks named him team captain, Luongo suffered a minor groin injury during practice.

Luongo suffered the injury after colliding with forward Jannik Hansen.

Poor Louie. It’s possible that being captain of the Canucks has a curse something close to being featured on the cover of an EA Sports video game.

Luongo will be out for the next game, which is “precautionary” says TSN.

In other news, Jannik Hansen will probably be hiding in his locker until the building clears.

Canucks Thinned Down

From Sportsnet.ca

The Vancouver Canucks made their final roster moves on Monday, setting their opening night roster of 24 players.

Heading down to the AHL’s Manitoba Moose are D Luc Bourdon, RW Mike Brown, RW Patrick Coulombe, RW Jannik Hansen, RW Michael Grabner, LW Jason Jaffray, and C Rick Rypien. Also on Monday, the Canucks released D Dan McGillis.

McGillis was with the team since mid-September for a professional tryout.  Some of the others we can certainly expect to see again over the season.  (And probably fairly soon, if the Canucks continue their recent pace of landing in the hospital...)
