Naslund is a Good Catch

From Craig Simpson at CBC:

With 749 points as a Vancouver Canuck, Naslund is the franchise scoring leader. He is the longest serving captain in team history. His nine straight 20-plus goal seasons is also a franchise best. He has led the team in goal scoring, six out of the last eight years, and been the team’s top point getter seven out of eight. He’s durable, and has played through various injuries, missing only six games in the last six seasons. His work with numerous charities is admired in the community. In all, Markus Naslund has been a great player for the Canucks and an inspirational leader in the community.

Jim Hughson Signs 6 Years with CBC

From CBC:

CBC Sports announced Tuesday that it has re-signed Gemini Award-winning announcer Jim Hughson to a six-year contract.

The new deal goes into effect immediately and runs through to the end of the 2013-14 NHL season.

Hughson, from Fort St. John, B.C., will continue to work on two of CBC’s major sports properties, Hockey Night in Canada and Blue Jays baseball, during the course of the agreement.

Since Hughson has been fairly clear he will not be working both at Rogers Sportsnet and CBC in the future—it was to be one or the other—it seems Canucks fans are now awaiting word of a new play-by-play man for next season.

Any nominations? Hughson’s tenure will be a tough act to follow.

Leafs Fans Need a Safe Haven

Toronto fans: Are you looking for a team to make it through the long, cold nights ahead?  William Houston at the Globe & Mail inspired me tonight when he questioned: Whatever will CBC do without Toronto on the schedule?  And it’s coming.

Despite the cheery optimism of Mats Sundin & Co., the Toronto Maple Leafs are unlikely to make the playoffs.

Still, the conversation on the most recent Hockey Night focused almost entirely on the Leafs, 12th in the Eastern Conference.

The national hockey media’s preoccupation with the Leafs is hardly news, but it does encourage me to extend an olive branch to Leafs fans.

Pessimism & Rebirth

In the last 24 hours, the hockey media has been fond of repeating the lie that Peter Forsberg was meant to be a “game time decision” tonight against the Canucks.  Whatever. Perhaps it’s sort of like when Peter Forsberg was no longer realistically considering returning to the NHL… yet somehow managed to sign with the Avs just in time to vanish into Rocky Mountain hell.

Oh, he’ll play tonight, because after losing Ryan Smyth and Marek Svatos to injury, it’s the perfect setup for Forsberg to resurrect. And I’m not even being snarky. Vancouver has a plan to roll over to this guy like Cloutier used to roll over to Joe Sakic setting personal NHL records on our net.

Darwinism in Vancouver

From TSN,

In just 24 seconds, 35-year old Darwin Head went from being a sawmill worker to Canada’s newest millionaire, as the Prince Albert, SK, resident scored the $1 million grand prize tonight in TSN’s second annual, international award-winning million-dollar giveaway, the Chevrolet Malibu Million Dollar Shootout.

I’ll put up the video as soon as someone else Youtubes it (sorry, I was busy DVRing “Law & Order” for some idiotic reason).  However—if you’re lucky—the video link on the TSN page will work for you. (Didn’t for me, but TSN hates Firefox as a rule.)

It should be said that Darwin Head was as cool as anything shooting from the point, AND—now that he’s got his first million bucks—I’m pretty sure he’ll play for cheap! How’d you miss this guy, Nonis?

(Oh yeah, right… blinded by dreams of Pettinger…)

Updated 10:37pm PT: Video now added below…

Having Fun with the NYT

If you feel like a brief diversion from trade talk…

The nice folks at the New York Times hockey blog Slapshot have been nice (foolish?) enough to let me—and bloggers for 29 other NHL teams—write some words on our favorite teams leading up to the playoffs. The first post is up—and apparently I’ll get to share a bit more Canucks propaganda over the coming weeks as well.  Should be fun.

You can read the NW Division stuff here, then follow the links to see bloggers writing on other divisions.

Hockey and Perception

Yesterday, the Washington Post’s (oops!) Wall Street Journal’s “Numbers Guy”, Carl Bialik, insisted that “Reports of Basketball’s Death Are Greatly Exaggerated.”  He was responding to the widely quoted Harris Report that found that the popularity of hockey had surpassed that of the NBA and college basketball.

There is some actual reason for worry: Over the life of the poll, the NBA and college basketball really have been slipping in popularity. But the reaction was also overblown. The poll didn’t measure overall popularity. It was also constructed in a way that gave certain advantages to hockey over hoops. And the much-touted difference between hockey and its hardwood competitors was negligible.

Play-by-Play Man Needed

From the Canucks/Wild game last night, on Sportsnet Pacific:

JOHN GARRETT: Do you think Alexander Edler ever gets excited? I don’t think so.
JIM HUGHSON: No. Typical of the Swedish defensemen… I don’t think they get excited when they get a paycheque.

Speaking of Jim Hughson, I always had a feeling that CBC was a threat to Canucks fans.  And so finally it comes to pass… bad things are on the horizon.

10 Worst-Dressed Sportscasters

imageAs should be expected, no sport that accidentally designed its signature look around the mullet was ever going to escape a list like this, and so Men’s Style.com couldn’t resist to going to the superstar of hockey hotness himself:

Barry Melrose, NHL (ESPN)
Guess you can’t blame a hockey coach turned sportscaster from looking like, well, a hockey coach turned sportscaster. What can brown do for you? Very little indeed.

But Barry faces some tough competition, too.

(*Don Cherry escaped notice, however, so I guess this sort of thing gets a pass in the style rags…)

Is THIS the Year?

With thanks to Greg Wyshynski at AOL Sports, I came across this cynical little video parodying the NHL’s advertisement theme, “Is This The Year?”

I actually like those ads just fine, but what the hell—I enjoy cynical-obnoxiousness as much as the next guy. (or more)  But even more importantly, I could probably listen to this screwball interpretation of Sidney Crosby’s voice all day.

Greg suggests that Crosby sounds like “Emo”... and I agree, but would just like to add that Emo sounds a wee bit wasted…

Live Hockey Talk

One of my favorite hockey bloggers, Mike Chen—and one who’s been running around far more competently than me (though over less years, Mike!)—is talking hockey tonight on Team 1200. Check it out if you get a chance.

Mike’s also a writer for FoxSports.  You can listen live here right now (7-9 pm PT).

Bill Guerin’s House Tour

Last night on Sportsnet television, they broadcast a short segment on Bill Guerin as he gave a tour of his home on Long Island. I’ve put the segment on a youtube video below… a peace offering to any NYI fans who haven’t seen it, from a slightly obnoxious (last night, anyway) Canucks fan.

So, how does a star NHL veteran live? Well, to start with: there’s a pet turtle, a rabbit named Rosie, and a pretty cool TV he has no idea how to operate.

Bigger, Stronger, Faster: Is it Necessarily Better?

I’ve been known to berate the programming of Canucks TV (and corresponding $12.95-a-game fee to watch it) but they did come up with something interesting recently—a new round-table show featuring local media discussing a variety of current issues in the NHL.

The video below is from last week sometime I believe, but I hadn’t had a chance to watch it till last night. Still, I thought it was an interesting (and sort of odd) question to bring up, so I decided to throw it on Youtube in case others were interested.

The panel features Vancouver broadcaster Barry MacDonald, former NHLer Cliff Ronning, writers Ed Willes of The Province and Iain MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun.

Hockey Television

From the Canadian Press,

NHLers past and present are jumping over the boards and onto TV screens in record numbers. Viewers of Showcase’s “Rescue Me” have seen Team Canada hero Phil Esposito sneak into some of that dark comedy’s funnier scenes the past two seasons. (Star and executive producer Denis Leary, a Boston boy, is a big hockey nut).

The made-in-Canada comedy “Rent-A-Goalie,” also on Showcase, has also featured Espo this season, along with brother Tony, Daryl Sittler, Tie Domi, Mike Palmateer and Paul Coffey.

Hockey Player Trivia

Today, Neil Stevens at the Canadian Press ran down a selection of trivia found in the NHL media guides.  For instance:

Chicago defenceman Brent Seabrook loves yogurt covered peanuts, Carolina captain Rod Brind’Amour can’t get enough Red Vines licorice and Los Angeles defenceman Tom Preissing says his favourite food is bacon.

Philadelphia goalie Martin Biron has horses named Mel and Mad Dog, teammate Mike Knuble has a leopard gecko named Flames and San Jose centre Joe Thornton owns cats named Lenny and Indy.

Fascinating? Well… cherry-picking the CP article a bit, perhaps there are some other odds and ends you’re desperate to know.  Starting with the Leafs:

Unconventional Forsberg Diagnosis

The North American press and hockey blogs have spent months analyzing the possible return of Peter Forsberg to the NHL (and often with the kind of reverence usually attributed to the devout contemplating the resurrection of Jesus Christ) but their hopes were sadly interrupted yesterday with the news that Jesus... err… Foppa… hurt his ankle.

But while those same analysts seriously ponder how this travesty could happen—studying the various miscues of Forsberg’s recent career as he’s attempted to regain his health and strength—the Swedish newspapers haven’t been nearly as preoccupied with all the accepted jargon.

They have their own theory about how Forsberg’s career ground to a halt:

Listening to Canucks Fans

I wasn’t around to contribute but The Crazy Canucks put out two great episodes of the podcast this week.

First was a short, mobile episode where John and Rebecca tell entertaining stories of visiting a Canucks/NHL legends event; Bobby Hull sounds like a great guy.  And the next episode recorded Thursday ran down everything in Canucks land.

Gotta say—hearing Gino Odjick’s voice on our own podcast saying “You’re listening to The Crazy Canucks!” is pretty damn cool.

Note: For my own audio efforts this week, I interviewed former Capital/Avalanche/Flyer player Keith Jones (a.k.a. “Jonesy”) for Kukla’s Korner.  Nothing to do with the Canucks, but Jonesy had a rather unusual journey to the NHL and was a total pleasure to chat with.

Pierre—The Fanatic Hockey Snowman

The Phoenix Coyotes have some new commercials out starring ‘Pierre’.  You can find all three at the Coyotes website, but here’s one with Keith Ballard and Pierre sharing a “telepathic” connection:

Love the accent! The other two ads feature Wayne Gretzky and Darren Pang.

Hockey Players Can’t Act

As a hockey fan, I’ll admit that I have a tendency to act morally superior to fans of all other games—as if “my” sport and “my” players are better than all others.

I’m told I suffer from Arrogant Hockey Fan Syndrome to some extent (which might be defined as: “the rabid belief that no other sport is anywhere near as fun as a hockey game” or “hockey players can do no wrong” or “everyone seems to hate us, but we know we’re better than you” etc).  But who can blames us? If nothing else, the NFL, NBA and MLB certainly make it easy for an NHL fan to feel morally superior lately.

But there is one arena in which being a hockey fan really doesn’t provide one with much to brag about: acting. And nearly all related efforts at self promotion have been downright scary.  Which brings me to Exhibit #1…

Distorting Reality with the Leafs

William Houston at the Globe & Mail takes note of the pre-season cheerleading going on in Leafs Land this week, and takes a few shots at Greg Millen:

Millen went as far as to describe Raycroft’s 2006-07 season as “excellent.” Excellent? Is that why the team rushed out to acquire another starting goalie? What is he talking about?
Millen makes himself look foolish by making these sorts of remarks and he also undermines the credibility of the channel. Why listen to Millen and his fellow housemen dish pap when you can get real commentary, sometimes hard-hitting, from TSN, Rogers Sportsnet and the Score?

But as Houston himself points out, it’s not just Millen, it’s the flavor of Toronto… particularly at Leafs TV:

How to Make a Canucks Fan Puke

image(aside from throwing a Mark Messier Canucks Invitational Golf Tournament, that is…)

The Vancouver Canucks opened training camp in Victoria on Thursday, and while anticipating that—all things considered—I expect Canucks’ fans would prefer that this is NOT a thrilling day-to-day ride.  Yet one of the opener’s events clearly violated such good common sense:

A few hearts stood still at Vancouver Canucks training camp today when Canucks winger Jeff Cowan piled into star netminder Roberto Luongo only a few minutes into the first set of drills.

Cowan lost his balance during a routine one-on-one and slid hard into the Hart Trophy finalist at high speed. The two became entangled in the net and it seemed like eternity, although it was only seconds…
