Demitra Out 3-4 Weeks
by Alanah McGinley on 10/23/08 at 04:40 PM ET

From TSN:
Vancouver Canucks’ centre Pavol Demitra will be sidelined 3-4 weeks after an MRI discovered fractured cartilage in his ribs.
Demitra, who signed with the Canucks as a free agent this summer, is expected to see a specialist to deal with the injury.
Kyle Wellwood is expected to take Demitra’s place in the lineup.
Lordy. Demitra’s penchant for injury is astonishing. Possibly the luckiest day of Wellwood’s life, though…

Last Great Hope

Rather unexpectedly, Matt Pettinger and Kyle Wellwood have suddenly become guys the Canucks are desperate to hang onto. From Ben Kuzma at Canucks Nation:
The Vancouver Canucks hope to augment their injury-riddled lineup with Matt Pettinger and Kyle Wellwood, should the forwards not be claimed today on recallable waivers from the Manitoba Moose.
Should an NHL club claim either forward, the Canucks would be on the hook for half of their salaries — $500,000 US for Pettinger and $498,750 US for Wellwood — but they have plenty of salary cap space. Money is not the problem for general manager Mike Gillis. Healthy bodies are.
As Kuzma notes, Pavol Demitra, Rick Rypien, and Darcy Hordichuk are all out for Tuesday’s game against Columbus. It’s like a 2007 re-run, except in this year’s edition the team is decimating its forward corps.
(Well, except for Sami Salo—but I think we all had Sami Salo penciled-in for a pulled groin this week anyway...)

Canucks Stuff: News and Fantasy Troubles

A trail of stories…
- Parenting Tip: Ryan Kesler promises to vent his rage on the ice not against his baby daughter. Says Kesler: “Now I might be a little more pesty on the ice and take out some of my frustrations if [Makayla] won’t stop crying in the middle of the night.”
- Pavol Demitra, “Offensive juggernaut”? Sure, I’ll bite, but I still won’t count on him for more than about 55 games a year. I don’t care how healthy he feels right now, the dude is the Slovak equivalent of Sami Salo.
- Some unsolicited advice for TSN.

The Graphical Pavol

Statistics aren’t everyone’s cup of tea (least of all mine; in university, I dropped out of ‘Introductory Statistics’ three times before finally finishing and passing the course) but they’re obviously a useful tool when it comes to breaking down a player—especially a player who’s new to the team and somewhat of an unknown quantity.
Below are four charts I’ve put together to look at Pavol Demitra (and one on Mats Sundin) from a variety of perspectives:
- Chart 1 -- Demitra vs Naslund
- Chart 2 -- Demitra’s 2007-08 Line Combos and Points
- Chart 3 -- Demitra’s Situational Ice Time for 2007-08
- Chart 4 -- Sundin’s 2007-08 Line Combos and Points

Jason Krog to the Canucks

Update July 14th, 10:40am PT -- TSN now reports Krog has been signed, but states that the Canucks have provided no information about the exact nature of his contract.
An astute friend haunting hockey message boards came across this small nugget—Jason Krog to the Canucks, with the rumor it’s a one-way contract.
Screenshot is from NHL.com’s player page for Krog:

For the latest from Mike Gillis, the video below features him talking about yesterday’s signing of Pavol Demitra and Rob Davison

Now if they can just sign SunKdin, they might be able to ice a hockey team come October.
Update 10:54am PT: Craig Custance of the Sporting News passes on that Demitra’s deal is for 2 years, $4 million per.

A $21 Million Shopping Trip Should Be More Fun Than This

It’s difficult to gauge the exact dollar amount available in the Vancouver Canucks’ bank come July 1st. I’ve read estimates from less-than-$20-M to $21.6 M. My own addition comes out to $21.1 M, only very slightly off the calculations by nhlnumbers.com.
Whatever the exact amount (and incidentally, I’m less-inclined than before to make fun of hiring a “capologist”) it’s a healthy amount of free agent spending money.
But for those Canucks fans out there still dreaming of Marian Hossa, I daresay it’s not going to be nearly enough.

On those ‘Demitra to Vancouver’ Rumors
by Alanah McGinley on 05/05/08 at 12:23 PM ET

Some thoughts from Minnesota, à la Michael Russo at the Star Tribune:
Oh, and lastly, this is unconfirmed by me but being told to me by a Vancouver reporter, but apparently Pavol Demitra was in Vancouver over the weekend being given a tour of the area by Canucks captain Markus Naslund.
As I’ve intimated here, the chances of the Wild even attempting to bring Demitra back is slim to none, and there’s a question whether he’d even want to return.
Demitra signing with Vancouver makes sense. His agent — or now, I guess, former agent — is Mike Gillis, the now-GM of the Canucks. Naslund is also now a former client of Gillis.
Both are unrestricted free agents, and you can bet Gillis may very well take care of his former clients. In fact, maybe Pavel Bure comes out of retirement and returns to Vancouver.
[updated below - Demitra did indeed spend time in Vancouver in recent days.]
