Canucks Retire All Their Fans; Oilers are Confused Into Submission

More about the big win momentarily. First up, the fuss about the number 7 this past week was finally sorted out Saturday night:
The Vancouver Canucks are pleased to announce the launch of the “7th Canuck” initiative to celebrate the passion of Canucks fans and their role in supporting the team over the years. Prior to each home game, one individual will act as an ambassador of Canucks fans and unveil the “7th Canuck” banner to symbolize the home-ice advantage Canucks fans provide to the team.
A great idea and a nice gesture—but there was still a bit of confusion out there.

Oh Captain, My Captain

How’s that for a cliché title? But the choice of a new Vancouver Canucks captain is not a cliché at all—in fact it’s one heck of a shock.
Roberto Luongo.
Now… did anyone predict that?? Not a chance.
Update 2:39pm ET: Assistant captains—Ryan Kesler, Mattias Ohlund, and Willie Mitchell. Coach Alain Vigneault also states they did advise the NHL this morning that they chose Luongo, and while there is no rule preventing a goalie from being named a captain, he won’t be permitted to have a ‘C’ on his sweater.
More updates below.

Meeting Canucks Celebs, Acting Inappropriately

Prepare yourself—I’ve got a pile of Canucks news accompanied by a serious overdose of photos.
To start with, Wednesday was the Raise-a-Reader campaign in Vancouver. From the Vancouver Canucks:
Raise-a-Reader started in Vancouver in 1997 and has since raised over $4.2 million dollars in support of children and family literacy in British Columbia alone. The Raise-a-Reader program went national in 2002, with twenty eight other Canadian cities hosting Raise-a-Reader Day this year. The Vancouver Raise-a-Reader campaign continuously leads the rest of the country in annual fundraising.
For those who aren’t familiar with it, the set-up was simple and fun: Just donate a buck or two for a Vancouver Sun then walk around the various street corners of downtown Vancouver during the early rush-hour where various Canucks - current players and alumni as well as a few team executives—willingly allow you to accost them on the street.
Much fun. I’ve taken to calling it “Canucks Fans Streetwalking for Literacy.”

Stompin’ Chris Pronger

Update March 15th: Pronger gets 8 games. Details here.
From TSN:
With poor quality video as evidence, Anaheim Ducks captain Chris Pronger escaped punishment from the National Hockey League after apparently stomping on Vancouver centre Ryan Kesler in a game on Wednesday night.
But a clearer version of the video revealed late Thursday - with a better look at the incident - raises the question of whether or not the star defenceman should be implicated.
Cleaned up and much clearer than what was available online yesterday, here’s the video TSN is now highlighting:

Playoff Hockey in March

[Updates below -- because Pronger is really just “misunderstood” and “the nicest boy”...]
Shockingly, the always-wholesome, sweet-natured, Lady Byng -worthy Chris Pronger has been accused of a nefarious act. From TSN:
Anaheim Ducks defenceman Chris Pronger could face disciplinary action from the National Hockey League after stomping on Vancouver Canucks centre Ryan Kesler on Wednesday night.
The incident happened in the opening minute of the second period in Anaheim’s zone after a dump in from the blue line by Canucks defenceman Sami Salo.
Class act, that Pronger. But then, I shouldn’t really comment—the game was on Canucks PPV last night, and being the top-quality broadcast that it is, they provided no video of the incident. Tommy Larscheid had a verbal eruption while witnessing it from the broadcast booth, and then… nothing. But assuming the Ducks broadcast caught this on tape, there’s reason to believe Pronger might be in some trouble for once…

A Reprieve From the Edge

Having been out of touch with the hockey news since late Thursday night, I hauled a copy of the Vancouver Sun into a breakfast diner off Granville this morning, ready to enjoy the whiplash effect of excessive optimism that the 6-2 win over Nashville last game was surely having on Vancouver fans and writers (lose a game? armageddon. win a game? salvation...).
But the hockey news isn’t always utterly predictable in Vancouver, and they turned the tables on me.

Canucks, Rangers, Blondes & Fights

According to the AP, the Vancouver Canucks’ win against the New York Rangers, despite a less-than-brilliant showing by the team, didn’t require much more than the obvious: Roberto Luongo picking up his 6th shutout. And apparently the Rangers didn’t much disagree:
Gomez said the Rangers didn’t create enough traffic in front of Luongo.
“He’s too good. Anything he sees, he’s going to stop. Everyone in the world knows that. We just didn’t get enough guys in his face.”
But was it simply Luongo who saved the day? Or was it Ryan Kesler? Or how about Pamela Anderson and that blowhole??? Hmmm…

A 4-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. And while others will likely object, I thought it was a brilliant performance.
First Act: The Canucks are competent and steady, earning a 2 goal lead.
Second Act: The Canucks are replaced by characters from the movie “Dazed & Confused.”
This is followed by coach Alain Vigneault hyperventilating foul language inside the Canucks’ dressing room—until spittle has sprayed down the front of his $1,200 Italian suit and he develops a twitch—which leads to…

Canucks-Related Transactions

[note: transactions updated 4:25pm PT at bottom of post]
For once, the NHL’s disciplinary committee hit fast and (I think) pretty hard:
Philadelphia forward Jesse Boulerice was suspended 25 games by the NHL on Friday for cross-checking Vancouver’s Ryan Kesler across the face, matching the largest suspension in league history.
For a comparison to other major suspensions, check here.
Personally, I have no problem with the length of this, but I fully expect there will be plenty of impassioned opinions—that it’s either: (a) not enough, or (b) too much.

Reasons to Never Order Pay-Per-View

The Canucks got spectacularly whooped on Wednesday night, maintaining their 18 year winless streak against the Flyers on Vancouver ice. (And all for the bargain price of $12.95, since the game could only be watched via PPV. Icing on the cake.)
But aside from Vancouver’s collapse, the game might end up being better remembered for Jesse Boulerice’s little moment in the spotlight. From the Vancouver Sun:
The Canucks lost centre Ryan Kesler at 11:39 of the third when when he was cross-checked in the face by Flyer winger Jesse Boulerice, who received a match penalty for intent to injure.
So, let’s start with that video:

Nothing Good Ever Came From Michigan
by Alanah McGinley on 09/05/07 at 01:22 PM ET

In the world of college sport, Michigan and its neighbors enjoy their trash talk. And even if it traumatizes a nice Canucks boy—as was the case last weekend—I’m always in support of Michigan getting trashed.
The papers are reporting Brendan Morrison’s distress as he witnessed his alma mater - the University of Michigan - get defeated in the NCAA football championships (whateverthehell, Brendan. college football? snooooore...). Regardless, it upset Mo, hence fun for others who sent him taunting text messages to amuse themselves after the defeat. Particularly Ryan Kesler:
“I called him the day it happened,” Kesler said. “I couldn’t stop laughing. It was pretty funny. Mo was pretty rattled about it.”
Morrison may have been rattled at the time but he has since recovered, at least based on his response Tuesday. “I received a lot of text messages but I couldn’t read Kesler’s because he can’t spell,” Morrison retorted. “He went to Ohio State, so...”
But GM Dave Nonis, who attended college in Maine, gets the final word: “I never have a hard time seeing Michigan lose no matter what sport it’s in.”
Amen.
I was looking at the Detroit Red Wings’ schedule today, and I say they go 3-5-1 in the pre-season. By the time Vancouver plays them home and home on October 24th and 28th, their confidence should be shattered and their souls hollow, making them easy pickings for Canucks’ scoring machines like Jeff Cowan and Brad Isbister.
And besides, that should be around that time that Crazy Hasek and his groin decide to take a month off. That boy’s equipment is living on borrowed time.
