Playing For Their Lives

Despite all optimism to the contrary, Sami Salo won’t be suiting up for tonight’s game 4 against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Vancouver defenseman Sami Salo did not participate in the Canucks afternoon skate at United Center and was declared “out” by coach Alain Vigneault.
So, Ossi Vaananen returns. Incidentally, Salo’s explanation of his injury has been my favorite so far. Classic. (In related news, Vaananen is peeing just fine. Well, it doesn’t appear to be affecting his play, anyway.)
One more thing—assistant coach Ryan Walter provided this quote to Canadian Christianity.com today:
There is a “new intensity” in the playoffs, says Walter, “and it comes from an interesting place—a feeling that the end is near.” It would probably be very difficult to play at that level of intensity for a full 82-game season, he says. In that sense, hockey playoffs are like the last two minutes of a football game, when points are scored at four times the usual rate.
It’s a good comparison, though I wonder if I should worry when such a devoted Christian as Walter says things like “the end is near.”

Salo in Flight

From Gordon McIntyre at The White Towel:
Sami Salo is on his way to Chicago, due to arrive tonight. He’s scheduled to skate tomorow and will be evaluated day-to-day.
The defenceman left Game 2 on Saturday after scoring the game’s opening goal. His injury has been described only as “lower body.”
Pavol Demitra is also day-to-day and won’t dress tonight, Canucks GM Mike Gillis told Tony Gallagher.
Taylor Pyatt, as expected, will be taking Demitra’s place, his first game in the month since his fiance died. I sincerely hope the distraction helps him, because I certainly think he can help the Canucks.
As for Salo… If he can play in game 4, well, that’s news good enough to make a girl find religion.
Update 5:02pm PT: According to Jason Botchford of The Province, via Twitter --
Demitra to be out at least a week, BUT Salo likely to play Gm 4. Gillis said Salo’s is not a groin or a shoulder problem. Guess away.

From the “Canucks Who Are Made of Glass” Files
by Alanah McGinley on 05/04/09 at 03:21 PM ET

From Iain MacIntyre at the Vancouver Sun:
Canuck winger Pavol Demitra is not practising today with teammates after absorbing a heavy hit from Brian Campbell during Vancouver’s 6-3 National Hockey League playoff loss Saturday against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Demitra appeared to hurt his shoulder on the play but finished the game.
Mason Raymond has replaced Demitra on a line with struggling Ryan Kesler and Mats Sundin for Monday’s practice at the United Center, which has allowed Taylor Pyatt to take regular turns with Kyle Wellwood and Steve Bernier.
Demitra’s day off could be precautionary, or could be a change for game 3. And not all that unexpected, given his play on Saturday night. For godsakes, what is Pavol freakin’ Demitra doing throwing hits along the boards? I can’t recall who he nailed at one point, but he nearly knocked himself unconscious in the process.

Sami Salo Out 4 Weeks
by Alanah McGinley on 12/19/08 at 04:10 PM ET

From TSN:
Vancouver Canucks defenceman Sami Salo will be sidelined four weeks with a broken rib.
The team made the announcement at practice Friday.
Sigh. Well, it’s Vancouver. If we weren’t breaking defensemen every other week, we’d be a different team.
(Wonder if the Swedish Messiah can play D...?)

Canuck Injury Updates, Plus the Ohlund Trade Rumors
by Alanah McGinley on 10/27/08 at 09:28 PM ET

Some bad news earlier today in the form of Rick Rypien’s impending surgery but the day had an upside. It seems Vancouver is running an Injured Canuck Exchange Program rather than simply a one-way train to the infirmary, as Sami Salo went through yet another full practice and could be back as early as Tuesday.
From the Canucks:
“I feel good so it’s up to the coaching staff and the training staff and see what they think because we have to play three games in four nights so we don’t want to rush back in just to play one game,” said Salo.
Indeed. And since the next game is tomorrow’s matchup against Boston, it might not be the best date for Salo’s return. I’m always joking that Salo is made of glass—and we now know explicitly the kind of damage Milan Lucic can do to glass.

Last Great Hope

Rather unexpectedly, Matt Pettinger and Kyle Wellwood have suddenly become guys the Canucks are desperate to hang onto. From Ben Kuzma at Canucks Nation:
The Vancouver Canucks hope to augment their injury-riddled lineup with Matt Pettinger and Kyle Wellwood, should the forwards not be claimed today on recallable waivers from the Manitoba Moose.
Should an NHL club claim either forward, the Canucks would be on the hook for half of their salaries — $500,000 US for Pettinger and $498,750 US for Wellwood — but they have plenty of salary cap space. Money is not the problem for general manager Mike Gillis. Healthy bodies are.
As Kuzma notes, Pavol Demitra, Rick Rypien, and Darcy Hordichuk are all out for Tuesday’s game against Columbus. It’s like a 2007 re-run, except in this year’s edition the team is decimating its forward corps.
(Well, except for Sami Salo—but I think we all had Sami Salo penciled-in for a pulled groin this week anyway...)

Is This Progress?

The Vancouver Canucks are in Tampa Bay tonight and coach Alain Vigneault has stumbled onto a miraculous plan: put Naslund back together with the Sedins.
“They’ve always been a good line, but we were just trying to spread our wealth a bit and we’ve got to be fair with Markus in that sense. He was trying to develop younger players and push them along, but he also needs to play with good players.”
Well, no kidding. I mean, whether you like Nazzy or not, you might as well make use of a guy taking up $6 million of space on your roster.

Bieksa and Frankenstein Will Live

Kevin Bieksa and Sami Salo both had a bad week. From Iain MacIntyre at the Vancouver Sun, “The Canucks Dodge a Bullet.” First:
The lower leg injury to defenceman Kevin Bieksa is more serious than originally believed, but Vancouver Canucks general manager Dave Nonis emphasized Sunday that the player’s Achilles tendon did not require repair on Friday.

Sami Salo Out Indefinitely
by Alanah McGinley on 09/17/07 at 03:33 PM ET

The apparent wholesale slaughter of Canucks’ players yesterday doesn’t have a happy ending - at least not in the case of Sami Salo.
From the Globe & Mail,
Vancouver Canucks defenceman Sami Salo is out indefinitely after sustaining a hairline fracture in his wrist in an intra-squad game in Victoria on Sunday.
Salo, who missed 15 regular-season games last season due to a variety of injuries, was hurt after being hit by teammate Jeff Cowan.
On Monday, Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault said Salo was too ‘nonchalant’ going into the corner prior to the hit.

Canucks Weekend Odds & Ends

Plenty of interesting trivia about things relating to the team this past week. From Trevor Linden to Anson Carter to events earlier today regarding Yo! Luongo… here are the odds & ends.
Update: Canucks defenseman Sami Salo has been injured Sunday as well. Story is added to bottom of this post.
Update 2: The Trevor Linden injury is also now added down below. (I can’t stomach making new posts for every freakish Canucks’ injury today...)
Vancouver favorite Trevor Linden may not be at the stage in his career that he can set the league on fire, but he’s proven to be a valuable part of the franchise. Last season’s playoffs were one notable part of that, which led to him signing on for another season with the team.
With a work ethic that’s impossible to beat, adoration from local fans that can’t be bought, and a salary that doesn’t edge the cap, Linden faced down his summer workout with creativity.
