Trade Deadline: 30 Day Countdown to Crazy

While most rational people would consider a 30 day lead-up time to the trade deadline to be a bit excessive, hockey people are another breed. Some might say we’re just fastidious, knowledgeable folks, focused on the details and anticipating the future. But I have another theory: hockey fans are drama queens.
We like to celebrate/freak out/rant about trades that haven’t happened yet and probably never will. Probably 95% of hockey writing online is driven by that basic concept, is it not? That concept being “making crap up.” We like the drama.
So, who’s on the trading block? That’s easy. Everyone.

Updated below with video of Dave Nonis today, discussing the trade deadline situation for Canucks.
Another update below at 6:50pm PT - ESPN has some news...
Another update below at 11:49pm PT - Rumors about a Richards deal with Dallas
At the Canucks Hockey Blog, J.J. is getting heavily emotionally invested in a deal to see Brad Richards in a Canucks Sweater:
There’s no denying his price tag is a big risk. Heck, at $23.4 million over the next three seasons, it’s a huge risk. However, for the last couple of years, we’ve been talking about the summer of ‘08 because it’s the summer when Naslund’s, Morrison’s, Cooke’s and Linden’s contracts all expire, clearing $11.5 million in cap space and paving the way to sign one, maybe even two or three, very good free agents.
Me? I like Richards, but all I can see are losses.

The Defense Rests

The Canucks have recalled Zack Fitzgerald, yet another defenseman from Manitoba who gets his first shot at discovering life in the NHL this season. As Brad Ziemer via Canwest News pointed out this morning, things are beyond desperate:
Can anyone out there skate backwards?
Good, because you may be able to help the Vancouver Canucks, who are giving new meaning to the phrase, “the defence rests.”
A couple of these d-men might be back, but here’s the current status of the Canucks top-6, as they were projected to be last October (to paraphrase Ziemer):

Canucks Trade Theories and Other Nonsense

Ed Willes in today’s Province notes what he considers one of the more plausible trade-deadline possibilities for the Vancouver Canucks:
The Pittsburgh Penguins are thought to be making centre Erik Christensen available for a physical defenceman and Christensen fits the Canucks’ profile. He’s 24, has decent size and some skill. The injury to Sidney Crosby may effect his availability in the short term, but Christensen might be a fit in Vancouver.
