Chopper Gets High Praise

The Flames Family is an elite group. From Eric Vail to Kent Nilsson, Lanny McDonald alongside Al MacInnis, to Theo Fleury and Jarome Iginla. The years roll by like a fat kid crushing a cartwheel. #2 is getting a pseudo-jersey-retirement February 27 as they raise his number in the new “Forever a Flame” honoring system. One may ask “Why not an outright jersey retirement?” The St. Louis Blues have given him such respect! Some speculate that Sir Kenneth King wants it this way, and so it shall be done. Regardless, “Chopper” is being celebrated for his illustrious tenure in the pre-Flaming Horse threads. His slapshot is legendary, his Nova Scotian roots made him unique. In 1416 NHL games he earned 1274 points, 3rd all-time in defensemen points, including 103 in 1990-91.. Let’s not forget the 1501 PIMs. What a rugged stud. His greatest achievement, IMO, was his Conn Smythe Trophy for The City of Champions in their 1989 Stanley Cup triumph. (Clears throat.) I like to include CFL, NLL, Spruce Meadows, and CIAU titles into this moniker. The shoe clearly fits. While he moved along in 1994 to St. Louis for 10 more solid seasons, he earned his legendary status as a Calgary Flame and when he reached the zenith of hockey, the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame, he entered with pride. And yes, he was inducted into that other Hall of Fame in 2007. Al MacInnis deserves his number alongside Lanny’s in the rafters, and I dare say no one shall don it, in Flame’s fatigues ever again.

Flaming Leapfrog

The Flaming C of Love is riding the wave of success to the cusp, once again, of playoff relevance. Recent disciplined victories over Chicago and San Jose have put them in an agreeable position. Jarome is afire and Miikka has been pre-Roman Turek-extension magnificent. The victory in San Jose at the Cow Tank (Cow Palace/Shark Tank) last night was his 300th career victory and earned him some post-game wine coolers and Gammeldansk. Leland Irving has been named tonight’s starter versus Phoenix according to DailyFaceOff.com. #34 isn’t much for the party scene, but may have been lured into some celebratory imbibing. Congrats!

As Jarome single-handedly won the All-Star Game with his 3 pivotal assists, let’s hope this can translate into a strong finish to the 2011-12 season for his cohorts. Calgary’s sole rep for the Shinny 2012 Gala was Mr. Iginla. I had pegged roughly half the squad to be All-Star worthy in the preseason synopsis. My drinking has only become more of a problem. Let us move past that. While some may say that you don’t make entry into the hallowed playoffs in the first few weeks of the season, it certainly can’t hurt to be in the upper tier at the midway point. That being said, your Flames are gonna need some Kent Nilsson-like magic mes amis.

As my Fantasy Teams continue to flourish, I have to admit that I perpetuate parity by allowing others to load up on Calgary Flames. As the mirth of their depth is exemplified by their handling of injuries, one soldier goes down, another returns. Scoreface Glencross is now out for 6 weeks with a Lower/Upper Knee injury; but alas, Stajan and BMo are healthy as a Flaming Horse. Furthermore, steady D-Man Scott Hannan is back with his innocuous play.

Making it Right, Jay-Feast Style.

Let’s start with a Peter Maher-style “Yah Baby!” Jarome snipes #500 during the post-Beantown abortion against the Wild. They punish Marty Brodeur and the Devils Tuesday 6-3 and win their 7th in a row at home. Thursday night, in the midst of their 1-0 OT winner versus Anaheim, we hear the news that the lovable gym-starved GM Jay Feast has undone the mistake of D-Sutz by reacquiring Mike Cammalleri. Let’s call him Cammy and avoid any grammar violations.

Well wasn’t that just a culmination of hockey greatness? 4 games, 1 point. The Good Ship Feaster has sent out the S.O.S. to the Coast Guard ‘cause it’s taking on water, and fast. But then again, the great fans of Calgary will simply wait for the reinforcements and get back in their battle gear for their match at the ‘dome on Saturday vs. Minny. The Flames blew their proverbial load as they came out of the gate with an early 3-0 lead against Ottawa (no pun intended). Sadly, they went limp from that point on.

Xmas 2011 has come and gone. Special wishes go out to the Grammar Police and Hater Nation. It’s hard to remain perfect but somehow you’ve done it! What’s really festive is the Flames 4 game winning streak. Minny, Detroit, Vancouver and Columbus were left in the wake of the indomitable C of Red. As they continue to make the Western Conference as tight as Kenny Rogers’ face, it’s time for the rest of the league to start taking them serious. I guess the New York Islanders didn’t get the memo; that, and the 2004-present winless streak in the Nassau Coliseum took the wind out of their sails for the time being.

Younger, faster, stronger; the mantra of the new look Flames. It’s that time of year when Sutter’s studs make their move to prominence. Fortunately they are in the hunt at this point in the season. After suffering through a 4 game losing streak, (2 rouge points) the C of Flame have knocked off 2 of the so-called jocks of the Western Conference. Minnesota was the 1st to take the knee and the awe-inspiring Detroit Red Wings were felled 3-2 last evening.

Flicker the Flaming Horse

As the Flames march down the trail of indifference, it’s nice to know they have the ability to be “in” every game. The Flames showed a little spunk tonight with a come from behind 5-4 overtime loss against the very pedestrian T.B. Lightning. The effort included Jarome’s 496th career snipe as well as Matt Stajan’s 1st of the year. Oh indeed the Dion Phaneuf trade continues to provide the egg in one’s beer. Earlier in the season the 2nd period was their undoing, while now it seems that they like to get Miikka a good post-pregame warmup by allowing a serious onslaught of shots in the first period.

If anything can reverse the ailing media of erectdile dysfunction, it’s the sale of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Here’s how I would handle such a big sports story- Leafs sold to Bell-Rogers. Expect same on-ice product. In other news, the Flames of Calgary are dominating out west. It must be the center of the Canadian universe that dictates the importance we put on various constitutions, and today was another fine example. Does anyone recall when Jeff Vinik purchased the T.B. Lightning from the Saw franchise owner Oren Koules and Len Barrie? One line at the bottom of the ticker. The only ownership worthy story is when the plucky owners of Ice Edge finally make their emergence known to the NHL ownership secret society…now on the more important issues.
