From Stan Fischler at MSG.com:
Really, when you think of Edmonton-born Messier, you immediately realize that he’s a much a part of New York life as Hoboken-born Frank Sinatra always will be part of the woof and warp of Broadway.
And that’s why every year for the past few Summers, I wondered—both in and out of print—precisely when Messier would re-appear as a permanent fixture at Madison Square Garden which is where it always seemed that he belonged.
With all deference to Edmonton—and Boston for that matter—Messier is a New York kind of guy just the way Beantown-born John Tortorella was made for The Apple.
In this NHL sense, naturals attract.
Messier in Manhattan—working for the Rangers—was clearly the preferred option for those of us who revere him. And from time to time Mark, himself, dropped hints that Seventh Avenue would be his preferred destination.
