A Tough Test

Tonight will be the second test for the New York Rangers - this time against the high-powered offense of the Washington Capitals.

You may be asking yourself “What was the first test that the Blueshirts had?” The first test came against the Pittsburgh Penguins last Friday night and for the most part, the team handled it well and passed it by playing a competitive game against the defending Stanley Cup champions. Sure, the team lost the game by a score of 3-2 but there were a lot of positives to take from that game and the score could have easily been reversed.

Tonight, however, will be a lot different. The team will be facing the likes of Alex Ovechkin, Alexander Semin, Nicklas Backstrom, Mike Green, Brooks Laich and others on a team that is off to a 2-0-1 start.

The Capitals are getting offense from everyone it seems. Ovechkin has nine points (5g, 4a), Backstrom has eight points (8a), Semin has seven points (4g, 3a) and even Laich has six (3g, 3a) points.

For the Blueshirts, their main goal should be to stop the line of Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin. If they can do that,. they will give themselves every opportunity to win a hockey game. Whether it’s Jose Theodore or Simeon Varlamov (5.11 GAA, .857 SV%) in goal, the Blueshirts should be able to put the puck in the net tonight and if they can do that enough and play a tremendous game on defense, coming out with two points does not seem out of the realm of possibility.

We’ll see what happens tonight but if the Rangers are able to leave Washington with a 3-1 record, it would be safe to say that may be this team really will be different this season. Again, I know it’s early but if you can beat a top-tier team in the NHL, you are certainly doing something right.
