Aaron Voros: A Shining Star on Broadway

If one were to ask a knowledgeable New York Ranger fan who would be leading the team in scoring a week into the season, I am sure that he or she would have mentioned the likes of Scott Gomez, Chris Drury, Markus Naslund given all of their talent and experience in the National Hockey League.
Would you believe me if I told you that five games into the young season, Aaron Voros would be leading the Blueshirts in points with seven points each? Well you better beacuse that’s the case.
In the team’s last three games, Voros has recorded 6 points, including two goals and an assist in tonight’s 4-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils. It was the 27-year-old’s first two-goal and three-point game of his NHL career, while also scoring his the first two power play goals of his career.
Blueshirt fans may not want to admit it but the team may have found its replacement for Sean Avery in Voros. Voros is skating well, going hard to the net, agitating opponents and more importantly, putting up points. For Voros though, it’s all a part of his job description.
“I like to think I have the easiest job out there, just go to the net and let the other guys do the work,” Voros told the team’s website. “True, it’s work down in the trenches, but it’s a fun job. I have a passion for going to the net.”
I’m sure that New Jersey Devils’ netminder Martin Brodeur was happy not to be facing Sean Avery but what he got from Voros was just as effective. Voros planted himself in front of Brodeur for almost the entire game and was rewarded as he deflected both a Paul Mara and Wade Redden shot from the point for his second and third goals of the season.
Rangers’ head coach Tom Renney has been nothing but pleased about Voros’s play thus far and knew that when the team signed him during the off-season, he would do what he was signed to do.
“When we scouted him we saw a greasy player who would work hard and go to the difficult areas to score goals,” Renney told reporters after tonight’s game. “We got him for a reason, and I think he is doing exactly what we’ve asked him to do.”
This is a player who looks like he loves playing in New York and enjoys playing with linemates Dubinsky and Zherdev. Hopefully, the love fest will continue and Voros will go on to be an effective and productive (in his own way) player for the Rangers.
On a sad note, I would like to express my deepest regards to the family and hockey team of Alexei Cherapanov. He was a young man who played his heart out and would have eventually been rewarded by getting the chance to star on Broadway with the Rangers. However, his life was taken from us at too young an age (19).

Voros is a good guy and he has always loved hockey. Had a run-in with a tumor and missed a year in college. I think that helped him put things in perspective. You can really tell he loves the game and enjoys doing what he is doing.
I always loved watching him hit the ice in Fairbanks when he played college hockey for UAF. I was the security guard at the team entrance and he was one of my favorite players to watch. It is nice to see him doing well.Can’t believe the Wild let him go.
He has a nasty streak but I think there is more respect for the game there than Avery ever had.

I taped NHL Live on the NHL Network today, and they were talking about Voros. A Wild fan called in and mentioned how he’s likely to knock down his own players during goal celebrations. It’s hilarious…his line cannot seem to stay on their feet after they score goals. I love their exuberance.
And wouldn’t you know…Voros was shopping in the NHL Store during the show, so they brought him up to the booth! He seems like a good guy, just happy to be here and willing to work hard. I didn’t know much about him when he was signed but I’m happy the Rangers picked him up.
