About Dubinsky on LTIR

In speaking with the blog Emperor earlier this afternoon, our fearless leader posed the following question to me:

What I want to know is how could the rangers put Brandon Dubinsky on LTIR? I know that it was basically done to save them cap room, but I also know the league has to approve LTIR status.  They must have pulled some string.

I put on my reporter’s cap and decided to reach out to Andrew Gross of Ranger Rants and The Republic. Gross responded with the following:

Don’t think there were any strings involved. Simple roster maneuver, really, at least as it was explained to me. Not sure if there’s a certain length of injury component but Dubinsky does qualify under LTIR guidelines. Rangers needed cap flexibility in the here and now so the move was made retroactively.

Thanks for clearing that up, Andrew!

In order to qualify for LTIR you have to miss at least 10 games of 24 days (whichever comes first).

If a player gets injured but you expect him to be back in 5 games but ends up being out a lot longer, you can put them on LTIR retroactive to the day they were injured.

So, for Dubinsky, in order for him to qualify for LTIR means he’ll have to sit out until 10 games or 24 days have passed since he was placed on the LTIR.

My question is then, so anyone can go on LTIR?  Isn’t there some kind of approval from the NHL to allow this to happen?

If not, then any player could go on LTIR to help with salary cap situations.

I guess there would have to be Doctor reports and such.  I remember a few years ago when Lamereillo had to get permission to put Alexander Mogilny on the LTIR when they were over the cap.

I would also imagine that if a team put a player on the LTIR when he wasn’t actually injured, grivenances from the NHLPA would be coming from all over the place.

How many more games/days does Dubinsky have to go before he completes his LTIR requirement?
