Dennis Bernstein, an extremely important part of The Fourth Period web site and hockey lifestyle magazine, was kind enough to take time out of his extremely busy schedule to tell us about how he got into hockey, how he got into covering hockey, his role at The Fourth Period, and the future of the web site and the lifestyle magazine.
PH: How did you get into hockey?
DB: My first recollection of hockey was listening to New York Rangers radio broadcasts a child; sitting on my parent’s bedroom floor and imagining I was a goalie making saves with a ruler and a small toy puck.
PH: Growing up, who was your favorite team/player? Why?
DB: Originally a Rangers fan, when I was 13 I moved from the Bronx to Central New Jersey where we picked up broadcasts of Flyers game on UHF (what’s that??). These were the Broad Street Bullies pre-Stanley Cup; they were young, exciting and, controversial, so it wasn’t hard to shift my rooting preferences. My favorites were the usual suspects, Clarke, MacLeish, Parent and Schultz.
PH: At what point in your life did you know that you wanted to be a hockey writer?
DB: I was at a Devils Stanley Cup celebration party in 1995 and ran across a guy who was plugged into the players. I had drifted away from the game in the 1980’s and the re-introduction to the players was all I needed to realize how great this game is. I came to the realization that the only way I could get into games for free was to get into the media. True story.
PH: What outlets have you covered hockey for?
DB: I started with my own fan newsletter called Score! It was a weekly and covered the New Jersey Devils in the mid ‘90s. While doing research online, I came across In The Crease and the owners were kind enough to give me my own column called Score! The notoriety helped me get a continuing role on ESPN Radio nationally during the 1999-2000 NHL season.
PH: Tell us about how you got involved with The Fourth Period?
DB: As In The Crease wound down, I noticed a banner ad on the site for The Fourth Period and clicked through. I reviewed the site and noticed they were looking for writers. TFP’s main man, Dave Pagnotta, knew of my work and extended me an opportunity to bring my talents to The Fourth Period.
PH: What are your responsibilities at The Fourth Period?
DB: I hold the title of Senior Writer for both the website and our quarterly hockey lifestyle magazine. Additionally, I am Director, US Operations for the organization, based out of Los Angeles, CA.
PH: What is it like to be recognized as a top hockey outlet?
DB: It’s very gratifying to have fans recognize our brand. We compete with the big boys despite just having a fraction of the resources; that goes to both the quality and passion our key players have, it’s reflected in the content we produce.
PH: Any big plans for the future when it comes to The Fourth Period?
DB: We plan to expand the number of issues of the print publication over the next 12 months and I wouldn’t be surprised if we got into the television business soon. The great reaction we’ve had with the magazine from both the market and NHL players makes this a logical extension of the brand.
PH: Anything else you’d like to share with Kukla’s Korner readers?
DB: It’s a privilege to be asked to do interviews like these and to cover the greatest sport and athletes in the world. I appreciate the opportunity to tell my story to your readers.
