Since the New York Rangers are playing the Philadelphia Flyers this afternoon, I figured now would be a good time to post an e-mail interview I conducted with Philadelphia Sports Daily Flyers’ beat writer Stephen Whyno.
Stephen was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to tell us about how he got into hockey, how he got into covering hockey and of course, his thoughts on this year’s Flyers hockey club.
PH: How did you get into hockey?
SW: I got into hockey because my parents raised me on it. I met Mike Emrick when I was 4 years old and have kept in touch with him since and only grown in my love of the game since.
PH: Growing up, who was your favorite team/player? Why?
SW: My favorite player was Mark Recchi, probably because I liked how he set guys up for goals so well and could also put the puck in the net.
PH: When did you know that you wanted to be a hockey writer?
SW: I originally wanted to be a hockey broadcaster, but I have a face for radio and voice for print. When I was hired by The Washington Times as an editor in October 2007, I told them I wanted to write some hockey stuff and got the chance.
PH: How did you get the Flyers’ beat writing gig at the Philadelphia Sports Daily?
SW: I was on-board for the launch of Philly Sports Daily in August as the website editor. When Flyers season started I also got the chance to write about them, and I have become the full-time reporter on the beat.
PH: As the Flyers’ beat writer, what are your primary responsibilities?
SW: I cover the team day-in, day-out, going to every game and just about every practice. Though the reporters I’m competing with are more experienced, I still try to get original stories and hold my own against these very talented people.
PH: Tells us your thoughts on the Flyers’ play this season.
SW: The Flyers, as Peter Laviolette has said many times, have been “consistent.” They’re a great team, and they know it. If they stay healthy, they will be in the Stanley Cup Finals and could win it.
PH: If anything, what does the team need to work on as they make their push towards the Stanley Cup Playoffs?
SW: The one thing is the Flyers do tend to take some games off, so whereas some nights they look like the East’s best team, others they simply don’t.
PH: In your honest opinion, does this team have what it takes to win the Cup this year? Why or why not?
SW: This team can win the Stanley Cup - the Flyers have the deepest group of forwards and best defense. If the goaltending remains this good, they’ve got as good a chance as any team.
PH: Any other thoughts you’d like to share with Kukla’s Korner readers?
SW: Enjoy watching this team - it’s been fun to cover them.
