An Interesting Take on Carey Price

From good friend of the blog Scotty Wazz of The Strangest One of All:

You have to wonder what would become of Price if he wasn’t picked where he was picked and if wasn’t as good as he was in juniors. Had he been in a lower-pressure market, would he have developed to a bigger name, albeit in a longer time frame?? We all know that goalies take the longest to develop, so was Price brought up too quickly, even given his success in the lower-levels. Yet, it would have been a catch-22 in most cases, as more often than not, Price would have been selected by a team with a big goaltending issue—hence why they would have picked a goalie so high in the draft.

Now, if we do a what-if and Price was selected fifth overall again, he’d probably would have ended up with Phoenix or Columbus, depending on where the lotto balls fell. Either way, those are two teams who have had goalie issues in the past. Odds are, they could have ruined Price off the bat by throwing him in the fire too quickly, but it doesn’t seem like they would have been in a big rush in order to get him through the system and up to the pros in a time quicker than the speed of light. Odds are they would have developed him better and allowed him to grow. Again—at what point does he get sick of waiting, thinking he’s better than he is and lose confidence for not being called up. It’s a tight-rope walk, nowadays.

Click here for more from a good hockey pal of mine. Do you folks think the Habs would really deal Price away? Is Jaroslav Halak that trustworthy as a starter? I want to hear you Habs’ fans comment on this.

This article overlooks one key piece of info on the rushed development of Price…Marian Hossa.  Seriously this guy ruins everything.

Remember the Hossa sweepstakes at the ‘08 deadline?  Remember how close the Habs were to getting him?

The Habs were about to enter the playoffs with Christobal Huet, Carey Price, and Jaroslav Halak as their options in net.  Price and Halak were so inexperienced and Huet is a consummate jobber goalie, pretty average.  Then the Habs made one of biggest, most overlooked, dumbest, preemptive trades in the history of the NHL and sent Huet to the Caps for a second round pick in ‘09.          - _ -  seriously.

So Hossa.  The Habs had that deal ready to go.  In an effort to sure up the the backstoppers, Johan Hedberg was part of the deal.  I can’t really imagine how much of an upgrade he was over Huet, but he had some veteran playoff experience, or at least more than any one the Habs currently had.  So they sent Huet to Washington for the pick to clear up cap space for Hossa and Hedberg.  Their hands were tied I guess if they wanted Hossa.  But in hindsight, it was so stupid because then Pittsburgh sweetened the pot with the firsty and we all know the rest of that story.

That left the Habs with Carey Price and Jaroslav Halak in net who between the both of them, I don’t even think their total games played added up to a full season.  They had no other options and at that point their fate was pretty much sealed.  Price got eaten alive and pretty much never recovered.

Hossa ruins so many lives.

Marian “The ruiner of lives” Hossa. Hmm… sounds like the stage name of an intellectual wrestler.
