Another Shutout for The King

For the second time in three games, New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist picked up a shutout (his second of the season). This time, it came at the hands of the struggling Ottawa Senators in a 2-0 victory.
This was a game in which Lundqvist had excellent rebound control, was in position for both the first and second shots (if there was one) and more importantly, he gave his club a chance to win a hockey game, which they did thanks to goals by Brandon Dubinsky (finally) and a beauty from Lauri Korpikoski off a great feed from Nikolai Zherdev.
As a team, the Blueshirts were disciplined, tough in front of their own net and made the game easy for Lundqvist. When they do things like that, it’s easy to see why they would win.
It was a great game for the line of Zherdev, Dubinsky and Korpikoski, as the trio scored both goals and combined for four points. Korpikoski’s goal was a great sight to see as Zherdev put the puck between his skates to get around the Senator defender and then slip a pass to Korpikoski, who wristed a shot past Senators’ rookie netminder Brian Elliot.
Petr Prucha had another solid game for the Blueshirts as he drove to the net, generated a few scoring chances and took and dished out a few hits. It’s amazing that this guy was out of the lineup for so long.
The team will return to New York tonight and take on the New York Islanders on Tuesday night at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Rangers have won two of the last three meetings against Long Island’s team so picking up another two points on Tuesday night is definitely within their reach.
Other Notes
- As was first reported by TSN, it appears that former Ranger Brendan Shanahan will be joining the team he started his career with, the New Jersey Devils. Let’s all wish one of the great players in this game the best of luck and continued success, just not against the Rangers.
- If you saw the game, I’m sure that you noticed that Bobby Sanguinetti did not play since Michal Rozsival was in the lineup. This isn’t a knock against Bobby but I’m happy that Rozsival was on the ice tonight as he is back to playing solid hockey.
- How low can the Senators go? They are now 1-7-1 in their last nine games?
- Before I leave you for the evening, I wanted to ask you all something: If you could go back to the summer of 2007, would you still have signed Scott Gomez and Chris Drury?

Absolutely not. Then again, I would like the signings a lot more if we were not subsequently hamstrung by the Redden and Roszival (whose contract isn’t actually THAT bad) signings.

I didn’t like it when it first happened, so I’ll say hell no, I wouldn’t have signed both. I would have picked one and let the other one follow the money elsewhere.
