Are the Rangers in Trouble?

From Patrick Hoffman (me) at MaxHockey.com:

After two drubbings this weekend - a 5-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning and an 8-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins - the New York Rangers appear to be in some trouble.

Friday night’s loss was one of the team’s worst performances this season. They had trouble generating quality scoring chances, had terrible defensive zone coverage in leaving goaltender Henrik Lundqvist out to dry, and looked extremely slow compared to the Lightning.

Saturday night’s loss was the product of poor goaltending from Steve Valiquette, poor defensive zone coverage and missed offensive opportunities. To leave Sidney Crosby open for three goals like they did that night is inexcusable and will surely hurt them again if the team does that tonight at Madison Square Garden.

At 13-12-1 and tied for ninth in the Eastern Conference, the Blueshirts are in a bit of trouble and things will not get any easier. The team takes on the Penguins again tonight at MSG, the Buffalo Sabres in Buffalo on Saturday night, the Detroit Red Wings at the Garden on Sunday night and then Chicago Blackhawks in Chicago next Wednesday night.
