Avery Scratched for Tonight’s Game

With the New York Rangers getting set for a very important game against the Atlanta Thrashers tonight in Atlanta, Larry Brooks of The New York Post reported the following on his twitter page:
Avery a healthy scratch “not engaged enough” according to coach.
Andrew Gross of Ranger Rants said the following regarding the scratch:
Sean Avery missed five games earlier this season due to injury but, tonight, here in Atlanta, he will be a healthy scratch for the first time this season. Coach John Tortorella just finished speaking to the media and his explanation was that Avery has not been “engaged” enough in “all facets.” Tortorella says the coaching staff has talked to Avery about this but finally felt it was time to take away ice time. Avery was also benched for most of the third period in Wednesday’s 6-3 loss at New Jersey.
“We’ve asked him for a while now for more engagement,” Tortorella said. “And honestly we just haven’t seen it.”
This is certainly an interesting move made by the head coach. One can only hope that it will wake Avery up while also hoping that it does not lead to something destructive.
What do you folks think of this move?

Though he seems to have been lobotomized by both Bettman and Tortorella, Avery seems to be just about the only Ranger other than Lundquist, Callahan, Staal and, occasionally, Dubinski who seems to give even the slightest care about whether they win or not. Don’t know why he’s singled out while Redden’s allowed to continue with operation shutdown.

Can’t figure this one out. He doesn’t give him enough ice time some nights to be effective. The constant line juggling doesn’t help either he should come up with lines and stick with them.

“Torts,” is an idiot and has rendered Avery ineffective ever since the benching of the playoffs last year, Avery hasn’t been the same player since. I think Avery still can be an effective player, but Tortorella appears to have never given a clear definition of how controlled he wants Avery to be. Hopefully the team will fall out of playoff contention and this egomaniac along with Sather will be fired.

The Rangers are a perfect example of a team overpaying second tier talent and making patchwork of players who used to be good somewhere else.
To me, Tortorella is as much to blame as Avery. The sheer fact that Tortorella has to repeatedly blast his players in the media just screams that they don’t want to play for him. And further, he’s another stupid addition to Sather’s patchwork team.

those are some terrible signings, without even looking in hindsight. those are just stupid contracts from the get go, with a stupid annoying coach that uses his temper and supposed discipline as a cover for his lack of anything strategic. just keep yelling and benching guys torts. a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.

Torts psychology of calling players out in the media is getting tiresome.
If tonights game is such an important game that a healthy “grizzled veteran” isn’t worthy enough to play, then he may as well just sit Avery the rest of the year.
Torts needs to look in the mirror sometimes, then look around to see that his team isn’t engaged enough to play for HIM.
