From good friend of the blog Andrew Gross at The Record:
Now, the Rangers desperately need his teammates to match Avery’s intensity as they host the Blues tonight after Tuesday’s sloppy 3-1 loss to the Canadiens left them three points behind the Bruins for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Boston has a game in hand.
“We need guys to play with that kind of energy and urgency,” goalie Henrik Lundqvist said. “The last two games he’s been really good.”
In fact, other than Lundqvist, Avery was the most effective Ranger on the ice both on Tuesday and in Sunday’s 3-1 win over the seventh-place Flyers. Avery has three goals in those two games – after being a healthy scratch in Friday’s 5-2 win at Atlanta because coach John Tortorella said he was not “engaged” enough – and led the Rangers with four shots Tuesday and tied for the team lead with three hits.
“I guess it’s the time of the year when you’ve really got to buckle down and get the job done as an individual,” said Avery, who chose not to talk to the media after each of the last two games. “I’ll feel good about playing in the playoffs. I don’t think anybody is thinking about their own game versus the team’s game and getting in the playoffs.”
