Blueshirts Lose Again

When you have only one player that can really put the puck in net, your team is going to be in trouble.

That was the case tonight for the New York Rangers as the team lost 5-2 to the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Garden. Marian Gaborik scored the team’s only goals while the rest of the team’s offense was quiet.

On the other side, the Penguins got a hat trick from role player Mike Rupp along with two goals from Sid “the kid” Crosby and a solid performance from their goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. For the Penguins, that’s 13 goals combined in their last two tilts with the Blueshirts.

While it’s nice that Gabby has 37 points (tied for first in the NHL) this season, it means absolutely nothing in the standings, as the team is now 13-13-1, which puts them tied for ninth in the Eastern Conference. Obviously, if the playoffs were to start today (thankfully, they don’t), the Rangers would find themselves looking for a golf course to play on.

It wasn’t exactly a terrible game for the Rangers. They put pucks towards the net, forechecked hard, had solid offensive possession but unfortunately, came out on the wrong side of the scoreboard, something that has happened a lot over the past month or so.

What does this team need to do to get secondary scoring? Where are guys like Chris Drury, Ryan Callahan and Artem Anisimov? May be even Sean Avery, though he has played much better in the last few weeks.

The Rangers are now off until Saturday night, when they get to take on the Buffalo Sabres in Buffalo, currently fifth in the Eastern Conference. Will this be a recipe for disaster as they play Buffalo on Saturday night, the Detroit Red Wings at the Garden on Sunday night and then the Chicago Blackhawks in Chicago on Wednesday night.

About Goal Line Report

The Goal Line Report will focus on all things Eastern Conference. Do I have a bias towards the Eastern Conference just because I am a New Yorker? No, but it certainly does make things easier! I’ll make my opinions known on Eastern Conference news bits (as often as I can), big games, hot and cold players, trades (I don’t make things up) and anything and everything else related to the Eastern Conference that I think is important for hockey fans to know. I will, in every sense of the word, be the beast of the East while also making sure to drop my thoughts on other hockey news items.

I, Patrick Hoffman, have covered the NHL since 2003 and have worked for a variety of hockey media sources including: Stan Fischler, Spector’s Hockey, TheHockeyNews.com, HockeyBuzz.com, McKeen’s Hockey, Blueshirt Bulletin, XM Home Ice Channel Hockey Blog, HockeyPrimeTime.com, FantasyHockey.com. NY SportsDay, and HokejaVestnesis.com.
