Blueshirts’ loss Isles’ Gain?

It was obvious that in six seasons with the New York Rangers organization, defenseman/forward Thomas Pock was never going to get anywhere with the organization.

This notion came to fruition on Saturday when the Blueshirts placed Pock on waivers. However, one team thinks he’s worth it and picked him up off waivers today.

For the New York Islanders, this move actually makes sense because as Chris Botta points out in his blog, the team has a spot for him at the NHL level, they really like him and injuries have caused a depth problem.

In Pock, the Islanders get someone who can fill in for the injured Chris Campoli and Andy Sutton. Pock also comes at the right price and the team is hopeful that he will be able to contribute both on the defensive and offensive sides of the game.

The blueshirts aren’t losing much when it comes to Pock. They already have six solid defensemen now in Michal Rozsival, Wade Redden, Marc Staal, Paul Mara, Dan Girardi and Dmitri Kalinin. They also have a handful of talented guys waiting in the wings such as Correy Potter, Bobby Saguinetti, Michael Sauer and 2008 first round pick, Michael Del Zotto.

Rangers’ beat writer Sam Weinman points out in his blog that the club may have been less than thrilled with his toughness or keep up with the game’s speed, two things that are essential in today’s NHL.

So in the end, the Isles’ hope, and the key word is “hope”, that Pock will be just the opposite in Long Island and will prove their biggest rival wrong.

About Goal Line Report

The Goal Line Report will focus on all things Eastern Conference. Do I have a bias towards the Eastern Conference just because I am a New Yorker? No, but it certainly does make things easier! I’ll make my opinions known on Eastern Conference news bits (as often as I can), big games, hot and cold players, trades (I don’t make things up) and anything and everything else related to the Eastern Conference that I think is important for hockey fans to know. I will, in every sense of the word, be the beast of the East while also making sure to drop my thoughts on other hockey news items.

I, Patrick Hoffman, have covered the NHL since 2003 and have worked for a variety of hockey media sources including: Stan Fischler, Spector’s Hockey, TheHockeyNews.com, HockeyBuzz.com, McKeen’s Hockey, Blueshirt Bulletin, XM Home Ice Channel Hockey Blog, HockeyPrimeTime.com, FantasyHockey.com. NY SportsDay, and HokejaVestnesis.com.
