In every sport, the team captain is someone who symbolizes their respective franchise’s identity and is one that goes above and beyond the call of duty.
For the New York Rangers, this player is Ryan Callahan, which is why on Monday, the team named him captain along with alternate’s Marc Staal and Brad Richards. With the announcement, Callahan became the team’s 26th captain in franchise history and is also one of the youngest captains in team history at the age of 26.
This past season, there were times when team head coach John Tortorella repeated that Callahan was the team’s identity and with good reason. “Cally” produced on a consistent basis, played in all situations, blocked shots, took the body and stuck up for his teammates when he needed to.
Callahan also symbolized the team’s work ethic last season as well. Callahan is a player who never gives up whether the team is winning or losing, which is something that the Blueshirts portrayed throughout last season.
For the other Rangers’ youngsters, Callahan is a player to look up to. He may not be the biggest player on the ice but he might just play with the team’s biggest heart. Callahan never takes off a shift and does whatever he can to make a play.
This was the right move for an organization that continues to make smart decisions as they head into the upcoming season.
